Dancing with the Stars -- DWTS -- Fall 2010

Or how about “Dancing with the Never Was’s”

Yeah, or an Olympic figure skater for crying out loud. One of Kristi Yamaguchi’s caliber would have definitely had ballet training to improve lines and such. Plus, her craft involved dancing to music in front of a panel of judges who scored them on, hmmmm, artistry and presentation? Once they announced Yamaguchi for her season, I knew everyone else was toast.

Kyle was not in the bottom two. They said that quite clearly. They were just trying to jack up suspense, because they had promised a shocker, and I’m guessing neither one in the actual bottom two was particularly shocking.

“In jeopardy” is code for “we don’t want to tell you yet,” not code for “low score.”

Did the audience boo Sarah Palin last night?

There was unexplained off-camera booing; and then there was Tom interviewing Sarah Palin. We are left to draw our own conclusions.

Per his tweet:

I’m not sure I believe him. Palin was booed at a hockey game.

ETA: and Jennifer got the highest score of the night. It just doesn’t seem plausible.

I thought Jennifer got a good score.

One theory I heard suggests somebody in the audience heckled her and the rest of the audience was booing that person. She did have kind of an awkward look on her face when the camera cut to her.

Anyway, about the dancing – Kyle’s an adorable teddy-bear, look forward to seeing lots more of him. Thrilled that Margaret gave up immediately on failed schtick and danced straight – and reasonably well – last night. Audrina (sp?) was pretty good – missed her last week, I was impressed. Poor Michael Bolton will be gone soon. Bummer that Mark Balas got stuck with a dud contestant this season.

And with that, Bristol secured her spot in the final 3. She’s going to get the Sara Evans, Billy Ray vote from people who don’t care whether or not she can dance - they’re voting for truth, justice, and the American way or something. Through Dancing with the Stars. She wasn’t bad, she was just kind of floppy. So was Brandy - and Brandy’s “solo” or whatever the hell that was was not a good idea.

I loved Jennifer and Derek, I thought Margaret did much better this week, Corky apparently decided to go for “humor.” Kurt Warner didn’t seem to do as good of a job as the judges claimed. And one of the Michaels needs to go home.

I was very surprised to see how poorly the Jersey Shore guy did. I couldn’t put my finger on what was wrong until Carrie Ann nailed it: he totally lacks musicality. He’s got everything necessary to be a good dancer except that he just has no feel for the music at all, and that’s really everything, isn’t it? I fed what would have been his vote to Michael Bolton. Not because Bolton is a better dancer, but because the Jersey Shore guy kind of annoys me, and Bolton doesn’t. His jive was ok, just not energetic enough.

Brandy’s dance was technically good, but I just didn’t like it. I should note that I prefer Ballroom to Latin dances anyway, and of the Latin dances, Jive is my least favorite. Still, I liked other jives last night better than Brandy’s and I don’t know why. It’s odd, because I like Brandy well enough; she doesn’t annoy me, she’s pretty to look at, and she is good at moving her body.

Bristol was very tentative. She did all the right steps, but it felt stiff to me. She’s not bad for a person off the street, but she clearly doesn’t feel confident (not that I can blame her).

I wish I had Florence Henderson’s legs! For her age, she’s dancing very well.

Kurt surprised me; I didn’t expect him to handle a Latin dance well, but he did. Not as well as Rick Fox (who continues to manage his height disadvantage apparently effortlessly), but well enough. Audrina was good; she may be a dark horse contender. But did anyone else get the impression that she’s really not very bright? With the advent of Brooke as host, we’ve discovered that you don’t have to be very bright to win this contest, but Audrina just suddenly struck me as pretty dim.

Jennifer also pleasantly surprised me. I thought her first week’s scores were more sentiment than merit, but this week she earned her trip eights.

Kyle is problematic. He’s a hella performer, but he shouldn’t have to be lured into ballroom with tidbits of hip-hop. He’s engaging, even adorable, he moves quite well, he’s graceful and light on his feet, and full of energy. But now he has to put aside the cool kid, and sincerely embrace ballroom, and he didn’t do that this week.

Margaret did the right thing, and danced well for her age, inexperience, and level of fitness. Unfortunately, I don’t see her ever climbing above mediocre.

Prediction: Michael Bolton goes down.
Hope: Bristol Palin goes down (not gonna happen).

Bruno was really vicious last night with M. Bolton and Florence. “Dragging Miss Daisy” and his comments about Bolton were much worse than the comments Kate Gosslin received last season. I hope he’s told to tone it down. Ripping into total amateurs that had one week to learn an incredibly fast dance is uncalled for. Constructive criticism is fine.

I hope Michael Bolton gets a chance to redeem himself. He doesn’t need to get eliminated like this.

It’s frustrating they put my two favorite dances so early in the season. They are the hardest and most demanding. The stars would have done a lot better later in the season.

I thought Jennifer was the best of the bunch tonight. I liked Brandy, but her jive wasn’t very jive-y. The costume really accentuated that she never straightens her legs, too.

I hope Michael Bolton gets put out of his misery tonight. The poor guy is trying so hard, and he is just so bad.

Yeah, I’ve got to think Bolton’s toast, followed by The Sit, Flo, and Cho, in no particular order.

After that, it’s actually shaping up to be a fairly competitive season. I’d could see any of Jennfer, Kyle, Rick, Brandy and Audrina in the finals. Maybe Kurt as well, if he keeps improving.

For probably no good reason, I snicker every time they announce ‘Teen Activist’ Bristol Palin. I mean, I like the girl, but I guess they had to have some way of getting around 'Daughter of publicity hound…"

Meanwhile, I take it Rick and Eliza Dushku are a couple? I noticed they keep cutting to her every time he’s on stage.

And is she an activist for something related to teen pregnancy? Did I hear that right?

And why do they cut to Jamie Lee Curtis whenever Jennifer Grey’s on stage?

Yeah, I noticed that as well. Don’t try to tell me that Baroness Hayden-Guest is Jennifer Grey’s girlfriend. I refuse to believe that.

Jennifer is pretty amazing considering that she’s fifty. I keep having to smack my head and remind myself that she is twice Derek’s age. Hard to believe.

I was worried about Jennifer after that dance. She looked very close to passing out. Derek was holding her up as they talked to Brooke. She didn’t look good at all.

When you push yourself that far it can take awhile to recover. She may have issues trying to rehearse this week. Derek may regret pushing a 50 year old so hard. Jennifer better pace herself or she won’t make it to the finals. Those two dances a week episodes are coming soon and they are brutal.

Fortunately, none is quite as brutal as the jive.

What was with Corky gripping his leg during his dance with Flo? Was that choreography? A pulled muscle? If it was choreography, it was totally inexplicable in what seemed like an otherwise serious dance. If it was an injury, why didn’t the judges comment on it?

Giving Brandi a solo would have made more sense if she’d actually done any jive during it.

Did Louis even choreograph anything for Margaret to do with her hands? Or did she just forget all her upper body choreography? I also think Louis’s reaction to their scores was wildly inappropriate. It was an improvement for Margaret and he made her feel like crap about it.

I thought Bristol looked really stiff and awkward in this week’s dance, especially with the air kisses. I was surprised by her scores.

I’ve never hated Brooke as co-host, but holy crap. She seemed confused about Tony’s waxed leg thing, and how exactly is forgetting your jive routine like remembering your jive routine but doing it like crap?

There’s no way that booing was for Jennifer’s scores. The audience boos while scores are being announced, they don’t wait 10 seconds and then boo.

Louis has never been known for his kindness or tact.
