The judges position Zendaya in 4th place, and I sort of think it was deliberate, although that was a weird Quickstep. Hopefully it won’t backfire and make her another Sabrina Bryan. Her’s was the first Hip Hop routine I really liked, too. I wasn’t thrilled with Ingo & Kym’s Lindy Hop - it didn’t seem like dancing. Kellie and Derek were great in both dances. Aly & Mark’s Afro-Jazz routine reminded me of a tribal number done by Derek a few seasons ago.
No more results shows.
I’m actually kind of sad. The one hour result shows this season were kind of fun. I always look forward to the pro dances and the Spotlight dance. I guess The Voice is kicking DWTS butt on Tuesdays.
I’m not sure how they can squeeze in an elimination on Mon. It’s super tight already getting 12 dances done in 2 hours at the season beginning. Also it would be horrible to make a pro/celebrity spend 8 hours a day rehearsing and then be told Monday to piss off. Imagine having 2 dances rehearsed that you never got to perform. That’s going to get some people very angry. I hope they do the decent thing and tell the celebrity on Tues night (at the production meeting) that they won’t be dancing the next week. But the low life producers probably want the surprise factor when they eliminate somebody.
I’m a very faithful DWtS viewer, but I hardly ever watch more than the last 2 minutes of the results show. I hate the couples being put in the red spotlight and being in jeopardy thing. I know it’s to build tension, but I don’t like to see people made uncomfortable.
I never ever watched the results show, and I felt sorry for the dancers having to put their sweaty costumes from the night before back on and then stand around waiting to see which of them would be eliminated. Was the suspense worth it? No.
But it will be interesting to see how the voting is handled, what with it all having to be done on one night. And I really prefer that they go a couple of weeks with no eliminations in the beginning. That just seems to work better–it gives somebody a chance to do more than one dance.
SYTYCD went to this model last season, and (IMHO) it was a trainwreck. They made everyone dance, and then at the end of the show, kicked somebody off based on the prior week’s performance (despite any kudos they may have just earned). Hopefully DWTS comes up with something better.
Remember that on SYTYCD, the judges choose one of the bottom three men and one of the bottom three women. Supposedly, they do take that night’s dancing into account as well as the previous week’s (and possibly the rest of the season as well), although also supposedly, they discuss eliminations with the choreographers first.
Remember that the first season of DWTS didn’t have a results show either; what they did was, they used that night’s judges scores and the previous week’s viewers scores. The problem was, they converted both sets of scores to places, and the combined places determined who was eliminated - and since it ended with two in the finale, the last night of dancing didn’t count for anything (which is one of the reasons the final two returned for a “dance-off” special).
Derek choreographed one of my favorite freestyle dances ever. The passion and emotion in that dance just took my breath away. It proved to me that Kelie Pickler deserves to win this thing. The other freestyle dances were so much colder and technical.
Can’t seem to get into the ABC vote tonight. The only option is a Facebook login and I don’t have one. It’s not allowing the normal ABC account login.
And it never came back up – that’s fifteen hours of lost on-line votes. ABC never issued any kind of notice on the website, just automatically forwarded voters to Facebook. A core application running fine for sixteen seasons, and it conks out on finals night? Possibly benefiting a social-media-beloved Disney kid? Lots of  out there.
Whoever is declared the winner will be followed by asterisks the rest of her life.
I’m guessing that Tom Bergeron (always awesome, and they know it) hammered the show runners into letting him acknowledge the problem.
:dubious: This should have been a hone hour show. OMG the junk filler. I switched to Deadliest Catch from 8:20 to 9 and skipped the eliminated dancers return.
Hoping the insta dances are coming soon or I’m finding something else to watch. This is ridiculous.
I thought last night that Derek won it for Kelie with that emotional Freestyle. Then they got the twitter vote to reprise the dance in the results show.
Congrats to Kelie and Derek.
Kelie had the best arc from fumbling amateur to dancer. It was fun watching her improve week by week and gaining confidence. She was able to tap into the emotions of a pretty hard life thats she’s had to live.
Zendaya has been really good since day 1. Every week she gave a technically great performance. But at times it was a little cold and distant. She’s only 16 and hasn’t really experienced that much yet. I’m hoping she’ll have a huge career as an adult.
I would have been ok with either of them winning. They’ve both represented the best dancing this season.
I’m happy with the outcome. Kellie and Derek really came on strong the last few weeks–and they nailed both dances Monday night. Kellie was great, but a good deal of credit has to go to Derek. His choreography is unrivaled on the show.
One thing I hadn’t really paid attention to before, but someone commented on it elsewhere: Zendaya’s done many (most?) of her dances in sneakers, while the other ladies have been wearing heels every week. I’m no dancer, but surely it’s easier to do most of that stuff in sneakers than in heels. Seems a bit unfair. A moot point now, though, and anyway Zendaya seems like a great kid. She was very graceful in defeat.
I agree that there was too much filler tonight. I did enjoy seeing some of the pro dances, and I liked the Psy performance. Could’ve done without the Wynona song. Ditto the Vanderpump dance. And despite my huge crush on Sharna, we really didn’t need to see Andy Dick stumbling around in the Mad Hatter routine again. I liked the Dorothy Hamill dance–it was a redemption of sorts for her and it was cool to have Yamaguchi join in.
Speaking of Yamaguchi, I didn’t watch a few seasons of DWTS, including hers. I’d like to catch up sometime–I wonder if they’re available to watch online anywhere…
There’s always youtube. Yamaguchi is my all-time favorite winner.
I liked the show yesterday because it’s basically the season in review and a variety show. It will be interesting to see what they do next season for only 1 night a week.
There was one bit of filler that I wish they’d included: Kenny Mayne, Jerry Rice and “Dance Center”. Pity.
I’m happy with the outcome – Kellie really came on strong in the past few weeks. And while her freestyle was amazingly emotional, it was also incredibly athletic – probably as much as anything as Aly did all season.
I didn’t expect to like Zendaya as much as I did. She’s incredibly poised for such a gangly little kid (and she is, all arms and legs. Looks like a colt.)
Yeah, they break the filler so it’s not so boring. Missed them.
All season long, I’ve been complaining that Aly wasn’t as good as Jones, Bendy Zendy, or Pick Pickler. Looks like America finally agreed. I got really tired of seeing her gymnast routines scored so high. She is not a dancer, imho. this is the SDMB, so ymmv
Pickler really did herself well for votes with her free style. I honestly think, if not for that one dance, Zendaya would be champion. (I would’ve been happy either way.)
It was a good, smart choice for a dance. It was really stripped down, in contrast to the “supersized” dances from the other finalists, so it stood out. It was designed show off her strengths (esp. mad flexibility). Plus, she performed it pretty well.
