"Dancing with the Stars" Season IV

He is, apparently, on a show called Hannah Montana, which is big with the tweener girls … he’s got a very solid fan base, and will probably make it through a round or two, despite the fact that he is far and away the worst dancer up there.

My pick for going home tonight – Leeza saved herself by having her birthday at the exact right moment. Buh-bye, Shandi!

Leila rocked the Mambo last night. She surprised me last week by being unexpectedly graceful; she surprised me tonight with her hip action. She’s such a solid athlete that I expected her to be all technique and no flair. I was wrong.

Leeza has no grace. Once again, color me shocked because I thought she’d be far better than she is. She threw ice water on the mambo.

Shandi is soooo much more likeable without the Miss America hair. She’s so young, but she dresses and acts like she’s 40 instead of 24. Her mambo was like eating salsa without the jalapeno.

Heather brought the 'tude to the Mamba and it was fun to see her strut her stuff. Noticeably absent is the bristly personality that I’ve seen in interviews. She was the second best woman there, after Leila.

How can a supermodel be forgettable? Yet Paulina is. She has a darling personality, and she’s gorgeous a la Stacy Keibler, but that’s where the comparison ends. Paulina just doesn’t feel the music.

Ian is certainly earnest, and he did a fine job, but he lacks the charisma of the other men. That’ll hurt him.

John- Who knew Cliffy Claven had so much rhythm? His age and weight work against him but he makes up for it with his charisma. For now. He’ll be around for awhile.

Clive - He is just such a gentle giant that I can’t help but like him. I really wish they had a 6’4" woman to pair him up with because in order to physically connect with his partner, he has to stoop. He’s trying really hard and I like him. But I doubt he’ll follow in the footsteps of Emmitt Smith.

Joey must have a solid family back home because he has a humility about him that I like. His boy-band dance training has really come in handy and paired with a likeability will take him far. With his rapid weight loss, he’s starting to look the part of a leading man.

Apollo was awesome as well. He and his partner just glided across the floor and performed some really tricky footwork. I loved their tandem leaps, er syncopated footwork.

Billy Ray actually redeemed himself last night. And on the *quickstep *, which I thought would be light years beyond his ability. He’s still by far the weakest male on the show. I’m not a big fan of the Robert DeNiro hair, but it beat the heck out of the in-the-face hairstyle from last week. Why he just doesn’t do a normal haircut is beyond me because he’s an incredibly handsome man.

Bottom 3: Leeza, Shandi and Billy Ray. My prediction for the first to go: Billy Ray. Which would be good, because then he can leave without further humiliation. I hope the country fans don’t keep him around a la Master P. That was painful.

I missed the first hour last night, but just watched all of those dances online.

Apolo’s quickstep was exceptional. The problem is that he was so good that he made it look easy, and he definitely had the most technically difficult quickstep. He also maintained body contact and connection all the way through, which none of the other men did. I thought he was going to have a posture problem, but it was very nice. He could stand to engage his abs a little more, but he must have been doing enough, to maintain the connection as well as he did.

Heather was indeed surprisingly good. I had wondered how they would handle the Latin costuming issue with her leg, and I think they made a good choice on that.

I think I’m the only person who’ll say this, but I thought Shandi was underrated last night. She did have hip action. It was smaller than the other women’s, but she and Laila were the only ones who produced their hip action correctly from the abs, instead of using the big muscles in the legs to fake it. I was disappointed that Len, at least, didn’t spot this.

As I expected, Laila was a borderline FCC violation. Damn, that woman is sexy.

I don’t get all the Billy Ray love from the judges - I thought it was dreadful. I also thought the choreography was too difficult for him - I actually said out loud, “Karina, what are you doing to this poor man?” while they were dancing.

The results show is over on the East coast. I’ll spoiler it … but it’s time to check out of the thread until you’ve seen the show, if you care.

And we say sayonara to …

Paulina. Bummer!

I agree.I liked Paulina, & was worried about her position. I wanted to lose Shandi, or maybe Leeza. I would have been cool with Miley’s dad going home. And I bet Kimmel’s going to be offended that they cut Porizkova for that blonde.Oh! I should watch Kimmel tonight to see what he says.

Mmm. Mild surprise at that result. You’d think just the eye candy factor would be good for at least one round.

There were more than a few unremarkable performances, so I’m not complainin’.

I really liked her. I think she had promise. I am not amused.

She was a fun contestant, even if not good.
There were two other women I’d have rather seen go.

Slide show on Why This Show Is so Damn Much Fun to Watch.

Such a pity. Paulina was the anti-stereotype of the supermodel as brain-dead and vain; she had a delightfully quirky and self-deprecating humor.

This illustrates the downside of this show; some of the “stars” come in with bigger built-in fanbases than others, that can carry them deeper into the competition than their talent would otherwise indicate. In other words: Paula was better than BRC, but BRC had more fans.

Was surprised, but not as suprised as Billy Ray was.

Oh, and can I say that I HATE Samantha’s hair? It’s too much hair for how teeny she is and she puts so much damn hairspray in it that it moves like one big plastic wig whenever she moves.

Here is Entertainment Weekly’s prediction on next ten weeks.

Laila Ali is going to have to do a lot better than she did tonight if she wants to make the final four.

I was pretty underwhelmed by all the dancers. On other seasons it seemed like the dancers improved from week to week, Althought Billy Ray actually seemed improved (and I’ll give the judges this - he really works at it), most of them didn’t seem all that much better than before.

I’m glad the judges are being more conservative with the scores. It gives them room for improvement.

StG

This was the first week when they weren’t benefitting from pre-season practice. They’d gotten both of the first two dances as soon as practice (rehearsal?) started, so had had a month or so to work on both of them – and only a week to work on this one. I think we saw a combination of dances where a week just wasn’t enough time, because the person isn’t that good (Shandi), and dances where the person has enough natural talent that he or she had thought that he or she would have time to do other things during the week (Laila).

Well, except for the clumps of 21s and 24s. And John being in last place? Not deserved.

Oh, and one other thing – was it in this thread or elsewhere that someone pointed out that Heather is getting a free pass on the gymnastics that others have been busted for? She did it again last night.

(But damn I have to admit she’s doing great. )

Hooray! My pretties, Maks and Laila, will be back next week. I saw that Shandi and Brian were eliminated so that means my guess last week was off by one week.

First off, I’d like to say how amazed I am at how much my opinion of this show has improved. It’s a bunch of overprivileged elites with nothing to prove competing for a hunk of glass…and everyone knows this. And, incredibly, enough, they’re having fun and playing it for laughs. Given the absolutely suffocating level of drama around American Idol these days, that is remarkable. (Am I a sicko for not particularly giving a damn when Sanjaya leaves the show? Am I, really?) A reality show that’s about entertainment…what a concept.

I was skeptical about Apolo Ohno, but he really seemed to put some effort into it, and more importantly, he’s enjoying himself. Very important. There were at least two spots where it could’ve gone horribly wrong, and he nailed them both.

John Ratzenberger did the best with what he’s got. Doesn’t have the juice to go far, but should stick around for a little longer.

Leila Ali will go as far as her fanbase wants her to. She’s both athletic and graceful, and I don’t see how occasionally taking time off for other things is a disadvantage. She looked very good.

Heather Mills…wow. I almost can’t believe some of the stuff she pulled off. Might not be in tune with the whole “ballroom dancing” theme of the show, but damn, is she ever fun to watch. Bonus points for 1. realizing that high heels weren’t working for her and 2. wearing something else. Seriously, ladies, it’s not that hard.

Billy Ray Cyrus, to his credit, is at least trying hard, but you can clearly tell that he just does not enjoy this competition at all. Even if he’s not the worst, I hate to see him sticking around for too long.

Clyde Drexler looked as awkward as ever. Unfortunately, he’s the one contestant where I really don’t see any point for being around (not that great, doesn’t really need this, no big cause). He could be gone soon.

The one that did the “Star Wars” thing…corny as hell, but damned if he didn’t pull it off. And frankly, after all the tedious elevator music, I really liked hearing that Star Wars remix. He’ll be around for a while, and he’ll make a run for the trophy.

…I forgot the rest. Maybe next week I’ll have everyone down. Well, better make it two weeks. Definitely no more than three.

Dang, DKW – you nailed it – the appeal of the show is that they’re having fun. And you’re right, BRC isn’t, and he’ll be gone soon. And Clyde isn’t, and ditto. Actually, the only thing that doesn’t make sense under this paradigm is that Paulina was gone the first week, and she definitely was. Shandi wasn’t, and thank god she’s gone. Leeza claims she is (or perhaps wishes she were), but actually isn’t, and she’ll be gone soon.

One of my underlings at work is a recent convert – he caught the last show or so of last season – so now I get to have nice Monday Morning QB sessions with him on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The other two can listen to these conversations (“Was that paso doble not the cheesiest thing you’ve ever seen in your life? And what the hell was she wearing?”) and yet not watch … hard to imagine …

You folks let me down! I have another commitment on Monday night, so I’m dependent on you to let me know what happened, especially since I haven’t even had time to watch what I’ve taped. You should have let me know that Joey Fatone (?) did a tango to the Star Wars theme. What’s more, it looked pretty good to me.

Now if only I can find the time to catch up on the tapes before the season ends.

They’re on track so far. And ABA (adorable black athlete) is hilarious. We do have one of those every year don’t we?
