"Dancing with the Stars," Season Two

Stupid hair-trigger submit button…anyway…

Tracy Lord - I don’t know enough about her to like or dislike her as a person (and I hardly think one should judge based on a single off-the-cuff interview), but in this contest, it’s not easy to like anyone else. She’s absolutely flying right now, and I don’t think anything short of a freak ankle injury is going to keep her out of the finals.

If she was too good, too professional for something as frivolous as this (and it certainly looks like it), that calls for more stringent eligibility requirements, possibly more thorough background checks on the contestants as well. Maybe the eligibility panel read a little too much in her being from the WWE and didn’t think she had the skills or determination to light it up despite her dancing background. In any case, I’m not going to call “cheating” on her part.

I don’t think the producers could have been unaware of Stacy’s dance background – they’re making no secret of it here, in her show bio:

And, as several people have commented, Drew’s performance background in a boy group included dancing; here is his bio. Note his wife is a dancer and choreographer; IIRC, the “high school” they’ve been sweethearts since was a school for the performing arts. (OT: A baritone? how the hell did a runt like that get vocal cords that long?)

Now, whether or not the producers should make more of an effort to equalize the field is another issue – but I can’t seriously think of either Stacy or Drew as “ringers” who pretended they knew nothing about dance going into it.

And I’m not sorry they’re in the show – they’re both definitely making it a hell of a lot of fun to watch. I was sitting there the whole hour and a half Thursday night with a big dumb smile on my face, I was enjoying it so much – because they (and all the other dancers) are also enjoying it so much. I was truly afraid last summer’s version was a total fluke and the second season wouldn’t be as good – but it is.

I don’t need two and a half hours of this a week. I’m watching them (stupid ABC), but I don’t need it.
Hour long performance show, half hour results is enough. Really, it is.

I liked the first third of Stacy’s jive (after that the choreography didn’t do it for me). It doesn’t seem fair for the dancers to be on the same round/show as the non-dancers; they’re all fun to watch, for different reasons. And while Stacy and Drew turn in killer performances, it’s nice to watch Lisa really learn from (what seems like) scratch. Having them mixed together like this destroys the meritocracy myth.

Does anybody know what’s going on, – if anything – between George Hamilton and Stacy Keibler? Bergeron referred to Hamilton’s constantly hitting on her, she has a huge new ring, and Hamilton referred to her as his “future wife”. He also said he loved her and asked his supporters to vote for her.

More shtick from George. He presented her with the ring earlier in the results show Friday.

Ahh…I must have been in the other room or something when he did that. Thanks.

Okay, I’m only watching during the breaks in the figure skating tonight. Right now Stacy and Tony are doing their cha-cha – and can’t help being distracted by the weird … thing on top of Stacy’s head. WTF?

Am I the only one bored by Stacy?

Perhaps.

No. I am hoping for a Drew vs Lisa final but I am afraid that Jerry’s rabid fans will keep him at the expense of Lisa who’s the better dancer.

Hmm, most of the fireworks tonight seemed to be amongst the judges. The dancers are obviously taking this way serious; every one of them seemed wound up tighter than a two-dollar watch. Tops, as usual were Drew / Stacy, but there didn’t seem much to choose between them.

Lisa is solidly third, and I think did her best routines yet. Jerry was clearly a distant fourth, especially with his frankly pitiful tango. Interesting choice to go the George Hamilton route with the props and stuff, but it didn’t work at all. Also, after showing so much class thoughout the rest of the competition, he lost a lot of points with me with his petulant behavior towards the judges. Dude, when it comes to this stage, you don’t get points for trying; you’ve gotta execute. You’ve been in pro sports long enough to know that, fer chrissake.

Gotta say if Rinna gets booted tomorrow night, it makes more of mockery of the scoring system than what happened with Master P.

I’m gonna go with Lachey for all the marbles next week; Stacy’s a little too perfect, frankly; you sort of expect every move she does. Also, his partner Cheryl is, IMO, smokin’ hawt.

No, I find her pretty wooden, just as she has been criticized. Facially wooden, that is. For example, during the quick step tonight, whenever she was in the head-back-looking-to-the-side mode, she just looked bored. There was nothing playing on her face.

But I do love that Tony of hers. He’s fabulous.

Jerry Rice: I didn’t see anything really bad about his dances, they were just…ordinary. Not much complexity or action. He’s been playing his heart out week after week, and it looks like he’s simply run out of gas. Frankly, I think you have to be nuts not to agree with the second judge’s opinion that he’s not horrible, he’s just the worst tonight. Which is what a last-man-standing contest is all about. Finding out who’s the worst tonight.

Stacy Keibler: I think she toned it down a little bit, but she probably figured she’s in no danger and wants to save her best for the final. Smoking hot as always, otherwise. (For the life of me, though, I still cannot understand why someone as tall as her is wearing heels. )

Lisa Rinna: She’s using some corny game show as a vehicle for over-40 empowerment?? Whatever, lady. Should make the final (which she should consider a victory in itself), but I just don’t see her winning.

Drew Stillcan’tremembertosavemylife: He looked good. Damn good. He had some pretty tricky maneuvers, and he pulled ever single one of them off without a hitch. If he makes the final, and he should, don’t stick a fork in this one yet.

Overall, an enjoyable episode. Just unfortunate that there’s no real drama on Friday, since everyone knows one of two things will happen: 1. Rice finishes a well-deserved fourth, or 2. The producers resolve to seriously discuss just where to draw the line with ridiculously popular sports legends, followed by a sudden increase in traffic on jumptheshark.com.

I observed last night that when Jerry got his relatively low marks, he didn’t accuse the judges of having a vendetta against him. He knows where responsibility lies for his performance.

At this point, I can watch the entire episode in a 1/2 hour thanks to TiVo. Neither the judges or the “stars” are saying anything new so I just fast forward through the talking and just watch the dancing. That being said, Go Drew!

Oh dear god, is anyone else watching this? Tom Bergeron is about to dance!

Results show is over on the East Coast.
Bummer. Jerry just officially made it one round further than he should have. There’s no way in hell he’ll make it into the final, though – is there?

Nice retrospective on Lisa, who turned out to be quite the competitor. I’m sorry to see her go.
Heh, well, Bergeron shouldn’t give up the day job (which consists of, er, standing around and making little quips?) but he did a semi-credible quickstep.

So it’s Lisa out and Jerry in for the final. Once again, after the judges crap all over someone’s performance, the audience goes for the underdog. And holy crap, Harry Hamlin looked like he was gonna start blubbing like a little girl. Man, I just adore this show. Everyone’s so swooningly luvvey.

Whoops, sorry if we were supposed to do spoiler tags there.

Don’t think it matters – it wasn’t the hugest surprise, anyway.

Yeah, I thought TB’s quickstep was cute and amusing – he definitely gets some good sport points for attempting it!
