"Dancing with the Stars," Season Two

I’m met Tom Bergeron and he is a small man. . . maybe 5’7" or 5’8". So Ashley must be really, really tiny. She was still shorter than he was even though she was wearing heels. But that red dress did not flatter her. It made her look really tubby. Too bad. . . .oh, and I thought Tom did OK. Better than one finalist, at least.

I’m so sorry for Lisa. She really did not deserve to go tonight.

I have actually long wondered about this. (Have I actually admitted my bizarre Tom Bergeron crush in this thread? Or just defended him in general?)

I was surprised, but not shocked, that Lisa got voted off, even though she should win because she was a non-dancer and improved the most.

Jerry’s performances are akin to watching Uncle Bill dancing with Aunt Ethel at a wedding: mildly entertaining but nothing to write home about. He does put 110% effort into it, so good for him.

Realistically, it should be a showdown between Drew and Stacy. I’d love it if Jerry suddenly turned it on and proved a worthy competitor, though.

I agree that Ashley’s dress wasn’t very flattering. I also can’t figure out why Edyta, who is smashingly sexy, keeps wearing those baggy tops and short bottoms. It is so unflattering on her. Their dance was entertaining.

I wasn’t shocked that Lisa was voted off either, but she did not deserve it. She earned the final three. She didn’t just work hard, she got better, really can’t say the same for Jerry. I just wish people could get over this mentality that “oh, the judges were mean, Just for that I’ll vote a million times for this guy who isn’t that good so he can stay in.”

Well, I was going to quit watching but I may stay in it for Drew. I don’t think being good comes as easily to him as to Stacey. But maybe Jerry’s rabid fans will vote him through to the end.

In his defense - Jerry has gotten a lot better (not as much improvement as Lisa) but in that horribly choreographed tango he was not walking from place to place as he did at the begining, but actually dancing all the way through. (just not very well). He shouldn’t be in the final three - but I am impressed with his effort and improvement.

I cracked up at Stacy’s “it shows my personality” what personality? She doesn’t seem to actually have one. She’s technically good - but anything where she is supposed to be anything other than “perky” she doesn’t emote well.

I want Drew to get it.

All things considered, I’m with you.
But this is the trouble with call-in-vote-shows. They become little more than popularity contests. No doubt Jerry Rice is popular. . . and a great football star. But this is a dance contest, people! Not a “most improved” contest. Not a “most popular” contest. The best dance couple/celebrity should win. Period.

In my opinion, the first version of DWtS ended badly, with Kelly Monaco winning. She wasn’t the Best Dancer. She simply got the most votes.

The problem is if you take the call-in/internet-in votes out of the mix, the show will probably not be as popular. And ABC won’t be able to wring as much money out of it.

I just can’t believe Jerry will have enough callers to get him into the final two – I refuse to admit the possibility. Not gonna happen, unh unh.

And in a dance-off between Drew and Stacy – I’ll be rooting bigtime for Drew, but would sleep at night if Stacy won, unlike season one, where Kelly’s “win” was such a complete travesty, given her mistakes throughout, and esp. in the final dance. Drew’s got heart and personality – amarinth, you weren’t the only one who said “what personality?” when Stacy said that. But, they’ve both been dancing technically very well, and I’m not sure Stacy’s wrestling contingent has distored the voting the same way the soap fans got Kelly the original (undeserved) win.

Stacy is so Stepford Wife to me.

I don’t think we whittle the contest down to a Final Two. It sounds like next Thursday, the final Three couples dance. . . and then on SUNDAY, we find out who won.

Don’t forget that there are restrictions on voting…something like 5 votes allowed per phone line and 1 per computer. So it’s not enough to have a small group of insanely loyal fans (exactly how our very own Jasmine Trias lasted so long) willing to blow an entire evening once a week. There has to be a sizable number, and they also have to be willing to not help anyone else, AND there have to be enough votes to overcome the deficit of the judges’ marks.

Now that I think about it, shouldn’t unfavorable marks doom a contestant instead of generating gazillions of wrongheaded sympathy votes? I mean, what’s the one mantra that comes up every single election anytime we hear about the third party candidates’ prospects. Don’t. Throw. Your. Vote. Away. It’s practically a law of the universe in America now. Why vote for someone who clearly isn’t measuring up, who clearly is going to go down hard at some point, and who’s already been written off by the judges whose opinions do count?

If Rice wins, I’m definitely paying a visit to jumptheshark.com. Right now, though, it looks like anyone’s game.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Jerry has done great. A few episodes back I was impressed with his improvement but he leveled off and really hasn’t improved that much recently and he still seems very uncomfortable dancing. I think he reached his plateau. Lisa has consistently made high scores in the past few episodes and she seems much more natural and comfortable dancing.

Has anyone tested this rule because I have a feeling this is an on-your-honor type of thing. I seriously doubt that ABC can keep track of over a million phone numbers, log how many times each number has called, and then throw out any votes that exceeds five. Besides, what if I use the privacy feature on my phone which masks my number? I’ve never voted by phone, but would love to hear if they enforce it.

Secondly, why do they display the number to call before all the dancers have completed their dances? This is supposed to be a dance competition, after all. How could we possibly decide who “won” if we haven’t seen all the dances? By allowing people to vote right away, they give a clear advantage to the couple who dances first, as that’s the only phone number we know. Right? I know American Idol doesn’t open the phone lines til after the show, but I distinctly remember the hosts saying that we should wait until seeing all the dances before voting. Which leads me to believe that the phone lines are open right away.

Yes, if you call more times than the limit, you get a recording that says you have reached your limit on votes. Some people get the limit recording immediately when dialing from a cell phone; turning the phone off and back on is reputed to help. If you vote online, it looks like you can vote multiple times per email address, but apparently only the first one is actually counted.

Yes, the phone lines are open right away, and the numbers don’t change from week to week, so you can vote for whoever you like before they dance. I guess they are afraid people might switch off if they can’t “participate” by dialing during the show.

I’m sad to see Lisa go home, even though I was pretty sure it was going to happen. I was even sadder when Louis started crying. I’m so glad he got a partner this time with more enthusiasm than dead-fish Trista.

Everyone send “stay in there” vibes to Drew’s baby - he says he’ll drop out if his wife goes into labor before the finale.

You know, his wife must be a really together woman. How many VERY VERY pregnant women would be happy about their husband spending hours every day dancing with a svelte, super-sexy woman?

I believe I’ve read that she’s a choreographer herself - I think she probably understands the difference between what the dance is about and what’s really going on. And Cheryl is very professional - she’s friends with Drew, but I’m sure that the relationship is staying appropriate.

Lea is probably watching him practice and telling him, “C’mon, sexier! Baby needs shoes!”

I saw a promo for DANCING WITH THE STARS in last night’s EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION that said Thursday’s show would be 2 HOURS LONG. And Sunday’s results show would also be 2 HOURS LONG! (Many apologies for previous truncated post. Fingers got bamboozled on keyboard!)

Not too surprising. I’m enjoying the show, but it’s pretty obvious that ABC is (a) trying to squeeze all the ratings out of it that they can and (b) making it up as they go along.

I’m okay with it – I’ll mostly be watching figure skating that night, so with a two-hour show, I’ve got a shot at seeing some dancing when I flip over.

Okay, just caught Drew and Cheryl reprising the “Thriller” tango, which I liked just as much this time – nice scores!
