Dancing with the Stars, Spring 2010

The results show has aired.

Woo hoo! Buh-bye, Niecy! Now we just have to get rid of Chad and we’re set for the final three.

yep. I admit she surprised me. I didn’t expect her to make it past week 3. She seemed only interested in cracking jokes. She must have worked much harder than people realized to almost make the semi-finals.

And yet, it’s possible to win the World Standard Championship with that kind of height mismatch (at least, it was 25 years ago).

Nevermind.

 Leeloo who’s that?

Barbarella I recall fondly. heh or is that Fonda?

The outfit was definitely Leeloo (from the movie Fifth Element).

Are you happy with the latest DWTS elimination? I certainly am. I thought two of Monday’s dances were pretty extraordinary again, as I did last week. I’d love to see a compilation of all the really good dances there’ve been in all (10?) seasons. Do you suppose something like that will ever be available?

While I’ve generally agreed with the posters who have found this season rather tedious, tonight wiped all that away, in my book. That was some mighty high-quality hoofin’, IMHO. 85 and Erin are still a few steps behind the Evan/Nicole ringer combo, but I wouldn’t feel it totally unjust for any of them to make the final.

I’ve gotta say, though, whatever the outcome, Derek continually seems to come up with routines that push the envelope in interesting ways, and with a partner who apparently can do anything, he’s abandoned all restraint. I don’t pretend to be a ballroom expert, but that Argentine tango was one of the two or three best routines I’ve ever seen on this show, and the Prince tribute wasn’t far off.

No worries for Evan either. He seems to have finally developed some performance chops to go with the precision and work ethic.

Only thing I feel like criticizing is that both Erin and Nicole did solos in their second dances that didn’t really seem to be Paso (in Erin’s case) or cha cha (Nicole). What the hell, though, mentally I gave Erin a ten, just for the outfit. Those boots…(swoon). And, although I don’t swing that way myself, I imagine there was a lot of swooning going on when Chad got his shirt off. Jeepers peepers.

Yeah, Derek is pretty freaking amazing. That tango was great, and I loved the Prince number also.

Hoping Erin makes it to the finals – even at his best, Chad just isn’t up to the other three.

The judges were generous tonight. The stars did some great dances. Chad has improved a lot this season. He can’t overcome the performing experience Nicole and Evan already have.

Maks has hurt Erin a lot this season. His stubborn refusal to choreograph ballroom routines that follow the rules has cost Erin points in nearly every episode. It’s not fair that her scores suffer. I hope the producers straighten out Maks before next season.

Erin apparently doesn’t have a strong fan base. She been in the bottom once or maybe twice this season? She could be a surprise elimination. It’ll be between her and Chad.

I liked the results show. One of the college teams got two tens and a nine.

Miley Cyrus was a disaster. There’s something very offensive dressing a kid like a stripper.

Sarah Mclaughlin was fantastic. Loved seeing Anna dance with her hubby, Jonathan Roberts.

Chad is gone. I guess the NFL fans didn’t bother voting.

Well, it was either gonna be him or Erin, and I think the right one went home. Erin can be the Kelly Osborne of the finals.

Except that Erin just doesn’t inspire anything like the affection that Kelly Osborne did. She’s tall, blonde, leggy, and gorgeous, and has a LOT of dance background, according to her package, even if none of it is ballroom. It looks as if she was picked up nationally by ESPN only a year or so after college, which suggests that regardless of how hard she may work or how good she is/was, the primary reason they had for hiring her was that she’s tall, blonde, leggy and gorgeous. There just wasn’t time for her to gain a real reputation for being a serious sports reporter before they put her on national TV. As far as I can tell, she has only two things in common with Kelly Osborne other than being a female of similar age: they are/were both very nervous, and both pretty much out of their league in the final. Somehow Erin just doesn’t work as the vulnerable little girl becoming a lady, as Kelly did.

Len’s repeated insistance that in a normal season all four semifinalists would have been in the finals was ridiculous, I thought. In a normal season, Chad would have been out mid-way, and Erin a toss-up for the final. Up until the semi-final, this season has been remarkable for the mediocre-to-poor quality of its dancers other than Evan and Nicole, not for its high quality. Admittedly, both Chad and Erin really outdid themselves Monday night, and both have shown improvement during the season, but nothing is going to make Chad into a great dancer, and I’ve seen better dancers than Erin voted off mid-season a number of times.

I wonder how Shannen Doherty would have done if she hadn’t been booted the first week. I think she would have been at least as good as Chad, maybe better.

Well, 4 years, but who’s counting?

I don’t doubt that her being tall, blonde, leggy and gorgeous contributes significantly to her success, but her history includes a few years spent on lesser networks.

You’re right; I checked Wiki after I posted, and should have done it first. Sorry.

Yeah, the emotional dynamic with Erin is significantly different from that with Kelly, who evoked (even in me, oddly enough) a kind of maternal affection for her. I meant, mostly, that she could take the “no chance of winning, but I like her and god bless her for working hard and making it to the finals” slot.

Even though the right one went home, I don’t like Erin’s lines. She always looks odd to me. Not really awful, just kind of odd.

I don’t know, I’m not excited about next week’s finals. I’ll watch, of course, I’m just not excited about watching any of the freestyles or any of the final dances. If the semi-finals was a preview (I didn’t like Nicole’s cha cha, hated Erin’s paso doble, and well…maybe I’m getting cranky in my old age) there’s just something missing this year.

Definitely a lackluster season. For me, one of the problems has been that there hasn’t been anyone particularly likable in this crop – usually there’s someone I’m rooting for as a person, and not just as a dancer. Evan and Nicole are both cyborgs.

Also, and I never thought I’d say this, I miss Samantha Harris.

Not me. Brooke may be annoying, but I at least get the sense she’s participating in the same conversation as the people she’s “interviewing.”
