Danger, Will Robinson!

I’m given to understand that some LIS fans retcon Smith’s change in character (from out-and-out evil to devious-but-likable-and-more-or-less-accepted-by-the-family) as some sort of brainwashing by his superiors that wore off in time. I kind of wish they’d made that canon–the family’s acceptance and Will’s friendship with him would make more sense.

Even more so in the 1998 movie, when Smith was REALLY, unrepentantly evil–there seemed no reason for the Robinsons not to strand him or put him in stasis if they didn’t want to kill him outright. It would’ve made more sense for movie!Smith to be a Manchurian Candidate–under control by some sort of embedded chip, unaware that he was even doing anything until he awakens on board the Jupiter II. The rest of the movie could have revolved around the conflict of (most of) the family not believing him when he swears he doesn’t even remember the sabotage. Instead of that ridiculous spider-business, if they wanted to keep the time-warp plot in there, Future!Smith could have been a deranged, murderous old man whom the chip had taken over completely, and present!Smith, realizing the source of his mind control, could have “killed” his future self by tearing it out at great pain to himself. The movie would end with Smith physically recovered, in the family’s good graces (except for Don who simply likes to bait snooty authority), but with some emotional after-effects.

I rather hope they do something similar in any revived series.

<snip>

Dr. Smith was a colonel.

Yeah, the show wasn’t supposed to be the Smith, Robot and Will Robinson show. It was kind of a fluke and I’m not sure a remake can deliberately recreate that dynamic. In this day and age, can we do a gay-acting not-gay character and let him pal around with a little boy?

I think it’d be fun, but I don’t see it happening.

What do you all think? Are they going to go back to the show being about the whole family team, or will they try to recreate the Smith & Robot show?

Maybe they should try sticking closer to the comic book, which predated the TV series:

Here’s something I only recently learned. The book Swiss Family Robinson (of which a Disney movie was made*, amongst others) didn’t have a surname stated. “Robinson” came from their Robinson Crusoe existence.

*It’s probably a good idea for a new TV series actually

There was also a revival pilot filmed about a decade ago (IIRC they wrote Smith out entirely & have Will a big brother). That went nowhere and the sets were purchased & recycled into the Battlerstar Pegasus sets by the producers of Battlestar Galactica.

And a psychiatrist; not that his medical training was ever brought up on the show (in the movie he saved this skin by treating an injured Judy).

There was no question of any impropriety of Dr Smith’s dealing with the boy at all in any way what soever !!!

Nowadays it’s a misunderstanding of some people who claim that someone is Gay or Camp, just because it’s a tabo subject to talk about such in a age where deranged nonsense like Political Correctness pushes anyone around to shut up on educating people truly on the subject.
There is no levels of the subject allowed to be discussed I have found due to the PC Nazis.
There are levels of different forms of such people and if Dr Smith comes across as what’s called camp or gay nowadays, it’s because people don’t understand what they are talking about.
A person can come across as you may think is camp or gay but they are not at all in anyway such at all and could be highly offended as being classed as such.

I believe such a subject should be talked about and all the different types put into the perspective of types of groups, so one is educated on the subject, not just totally blind ignorant blanket that’s tossed over it all, under the guise of Political Correctness in how they push or demand all of such subjects, there by forcing all people under the lowest denominator concept and as a result we only have uneducated dolts marching about pushing others about like little Nazi Leaders everywhere, who go into a spac attack mode because there little narrow minded, short sighted bubble as been offended or burst.:frowning: a subject denied and why ? the PC police don’t believe you have the right or brains to understand it all and want to feed you like mushrooms, keeping you in the dark and feed just shit.
You are even denied any opinion on the subject !! sounds just like the Nazi’s type of crap and how they tried to push things to me only more cunningly.

Dr Smith was not a homosexual at all.

I think Dr Smith should be played " c o c k s u c k e r " Swear from Deadwood

Over the weekend I was thumbing through my old copy of Stephen Whitfield’s “The Making of Star Trek” (trying to find something mentioned in a recent ST thread) and came across that story. Apparently they grilled Roddenberry for two hours about his series idea before telling him that they were passing on it. Roddenberry was pissed that they didn’t just tell him up front that they weren’t interested.

Before reading that story, I had always been struck by the similarities between the two shows: the saucer layout of the Jupiter II, the elevators between decks, the velour uniforms, and so on. It looks as though CBS and/or Allen copied (or at least were heavily influenced by) Roddenberry’s concepts on design.

The trend among hot leading-man actors in Hollywood these days isn’t to be offended by being “classed” as gay. What’s to be offended about? From what I"ve heard, it’s trendy to have a gay role on your resume.

Commodore I told you to drop the political commentary.

Would you still consider it a bad movie if it didn’t use the name? Because, while I saw it only as a kid, I rather liked it. I later saw the show and was actually disappointed that it wasn’t remotely similar.

I’ve just always kinda wondered about that. Bad movie, or bad adaptation, or both? (It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve liked an objectively bad movie, especially as a kid.)

I so would have marooned Dr. Smith.

Definitely.

Oh yeah. I watched the show when I was a kid, but was not a super fan (and I think I gave up after two seasons) so my dislike of the movie is not based on a love of the show. The ending was a total muddle.
Based on this movie and I, Robot, Akiva Goldsman shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a word processor if you ask me.

Trends come and go, as that’s all they truly are.

If one is not what people think or say you are, I think only a fool would not be offended by such a statement.

If someone comes up saying such nonsense, it could be just a dam fool prejudice opinion from someone who does not know or even care what they say, now could it be truly a foolish statement if it’s not true, is that not so ?

The trend nowadays maybe all about idolising some type of people and because it’s a trend, that does not make it have any solid foundations.

If one was in question as of the likes of our Dr Smith being said he is gay and just because it’s only perceived trendy nowadays, does not give others the right to claim anything as such at all, be it if a trendy dimwit fool wants to believe it or not.

Just because it’s of the trend, does not make it ok to label all people one may think in the same boat and that’s why I look down on trendy simple minded hair brain nonsense that prevails nowadays under the guise of Political Correctness, that just truly only pushing a new age of degenerate cunning deceptions much like an Orwellian influence in public discourse, so as to oppress any sensible dialogue.
I see the PC mob agenda as merely an insidious form of lying.

No he was not gay at all !
