Netflix is bringing back Lost In Space! This means, of course that we’ll need a new Dr. Smith. What about John de Lancie?
Dark ‘n’ gritty or retro ‘n’ campy?
He can do both, just like Jonathan Harris.
So, probably not played for laughs.
Hey, Nathan Fillion could play John Robinson…
Wake me up when they cast Judy and Penny.
My nomination for Dr. Smith: Rhys Darby
Why are they mutually exclusive? It could be dark ‘n’ campy (actually I don’t know how they’d pull that off, but it could be interesting), or retro ‘n’ gritty.
As long as it’s better than the film version with William Hurt and Gary Oldman.
The linked article says
If there was no comedy, it would be as bad as the movie. Which it might be anyhow.
In the first six episodes of the original Lost in Space it was a straight forward science fiction adventure. Dr. Smith was a villain with a unknown agenda. I liked that show. Unfortunately people expect a campy Dr. Smith so that’s what we’ll probably get.
I read “Nathan Fillion” but for some reason my brain went to “Nathan Lane”.
I vote for Charles Dance now that he’s not busy slaughtering Starks. He’s got the villain thing down, and he can handle comedy.
That remains the only movie I’ve ever walked out of in a theater. God, that movie was stupid and awful.
I watched it at home, all the way through. It got worse as it went on, in case you ever doubted your decision.
Spoiler for the film IIRC:
Future Dr Smith, in an environment suit to contain his alien spider spawn, is killed by the rolling rocks inside the wormhole that Future Will Robinson built to return to Earth.
“I’m sorry, Spleen, there’s not enough Rolling Rock in the universe to make that movie watchable. Except for the boobalicious space suits.”
Next up, I fear: “Car 54, Where Are You?” set in a gritty urban jungle with a mixed-race pair of patrolmen with dark, troubled pasts.
This sounds like a plot made up by three 10-year olds who couldn’t agree. All that’s missing is the RAND Corporation and reverse vampires.
“So deftly captured”?!? What universe does she live in?!? :dubious: :smack:
True. But Gary Oldman was good, he made for an excellent Dr. Smith :). Sadly one well-cast part can’t save a dog of a film.
I have this picture of Cuba Gooding, Jr, as Gunther: “Oooh! Oooh!” :smack:
The LiS universe, obviously! Where the men are neuter, the women large-breasted and even the rocks are craft foam.
