Dannel Malloy is an Greedy, Insensitive Individual

I haven’t been on the SDMB for quite some time now, mainly because I am busy playing League of Legends and am starting Ranked Solo Queue pretty soon.

But I just thought I would stop by and say that our governor in CT has ruined our whole state’s Thanksgiving. How, you ask? He allowed stores to open today and do “Black Thursday”. Now, we aren’t having our Thanksgiving dinner with another family until tomorrow because my parents (and parents of the other family) didn’t want to miss out on deals. And this, as you imagine, probably happened to lots of families.

But that isn’t even much of an issue. The main people I feel bad for is the workers today, who are being forced to work on a Thanksgiving night. I heard that people were complaining all over the local radio here. This is because Massachusetts and Rhode Island banned Black Thursday. But our governor didn’t - because he’s greedy.

Why is it the governor’s fault that your parents are stupid, crass, consumerist idiots?

Here in Colorado, we have had “Black Thursday” for the past few years. It hasn’t affected my Thanksgivings any. Why? Because I don’t give a shit about getting $20 off whatever unnecessary disposable piece of shit “gifts” they’re selling at Wal-Mart or wherever the fuck, and neither does my family.

Why is it the government’s job to force people to enjoy holidays rather than wasting them lining up like cattle at some Chinese warehouse store?

How much money is the governor getting thanks to this decision?

You realize only 3 states banned Black Thursday, right?

Never mind. -Deleted post.

I don’t think the government should have the right to tell businesses when they can and cannot open. Whether it’s Sundays, holidays or any random day of the year.

If your family members would rather spend the holiday shopping than getting together, that speaks to their character flaw or greediness. They have the choice not to go.

As I said to the Facebook people complaining about this - not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving, and some of those would love to be working that day. I haven’t seen any proof that anyone was actually forced to work either.

How much money is he making already, especially with the ridiculous taxes here?

I am mainly feeling bad for the workers here.

You are aware that the governor of Connecticut is not some kind of third-world despot, right? The taxes are not paid to him personally.

His salary is $150,000 annually regardless of how much the state collects in taxes, and regardless of whether stores are open on Thanksgiving or not.

I just moved to Long Island from Connecticut about 18 mos ago. Give me Connecticut taxes any day. I think your anger is misplaced. CT has been trying to get rid of blue liquor laws for awhile now. Expanding blue laws to prohibit shopping on Thanksgiving would be step backwards.

HA HAHAHHA…you’re cute.

Just saw about how a Wal Mart employee was saying how they were all really excited about working on Thanksgiving. So, that’s straight from the horse’s mouth.

It didn’t “happen to” your family. If Thanksgiving on Thursday was really important to your family, you’d be having it. Arguably it happened to the families of the workers, but the shoppers just made a choice to prioritize shopping over Thanksgiving.

I worked at Walmart several years ago, and I worked on Thanksgiving 3 years in a row. I actually did like working on Thanksgiving–we were so slow, that it was almost like a paid vacation day.

Incidentally, I’m both amused and bewildered by this current rage over stores being open on Thanksgiving. Walmart supercenters have been open on Thanksgiving ever since I can remember.

I went to Wal-Mart today to get a meat thermometer, and most of the sale merchandise was shrink wrapped in the aisles with signs that said it would not be sold until 6:00pm.

I have a pet theory that Black Friday, and by extension Black Thursday, are just relative avoidance techniques for people who don’t like football.

They have football games the day after Thanksgiving now?

College games. Bennington vs Wellesley, today.

+1. Hell, +250.

CT taxes are almost wholly property taxes, which are set by the voters of each town, paid to the town, and spent in the town. 99% of the rest of the US should be so lucky (and, frankly, get so much in return for their taxes).

We moved from California, which is in the final death throes from Prop 13; taxes in California are just as high but a complete mess. All revenue goes into the General Fund slushpile; all funding comes from the slushpile. No brakes, no accountability, and funding is a matter of who has the biggest hands to grab it. An anti-taxer’s demon in every respect… and CAUSED by the original idiot tax-slashers.

ETA: Correction: caused by the idiot voters who fell for Jarvis and Gann’s “teach 'em a lesson” horseshit. No one who understands what happened there could possibly support Tea Party-style aims of “slash now, slash deep and wait for wonderfulness to follow.”

Absolutely. We had moved to CT from California, in part, because the schools were a mess, due to the disaster that was Prop 13.

They’ve been playing football on the Friday after Thanksgiving for at least 20 years, probably longer.
