Daria on Noggin' - Thanks, but...

I suppose you could say it’s better than it not being on at all, but it’s so frustrating to watch Daria on ‘The-n’ (Noggin’s version of Nick-at-Night).

For those who haven’t seen it, Noggin’ is a joint venture of Nickelodeon and PBS and is aimed at the 2 to 12 year old crowd. Consequently, Daria episodes are often being edited for content. Any fan of Daria knows that what made the show so good was the writing, so even the smallest edit is noticable (not to mention very annoying). And often the edits are not so small (Jane’s encounter with bi-sexual Alison in ‘Is it Fall Yet’ was totally removed). And it isn’t on until 10pm anyway, so why do they feel they have to edit it?

I realize that because Noggin’, like MTV, is owned by Viacom, that’s why Daria reruns ended up there (i.e. they were free). But if it meant editing them they should have just kept reruning them on MTV. Besides, Daria is not and never was for the 2 to 12 year old audience anyway.

Also, Noggin’ is non-commercial, but they have commercial breaks. They just show ads for their other shows instead of products. Apparently however, their only other show seems to be that sickening Degrassi. I would rather sit through ten Carrot-Top AT&T commercials then to have to hear that ****ing middle school chorus sing “Whatever it takes…” again!!!

I am rather confused by the editing. I’ve watched (memorized, burned into my retinas, whatever) those Degrassi commercials. I swear the content is just as bad on that show as it is on Daria. It’s just live-action instead of animation.

I’m more upset by the fact that these people have no sense of continuity. None! How difficult is it to show the episodes in order? They don’t even have to show them in original order, just quit showing episodes from totally different seasons one after the other. It’s confusing enough to me and I’ve seen nearly all of them…what are people new to the series supposed to think when Tom keeps appearing out of nowhere?

I’m hoping for a release to DVD or video. I would be most willing to purchase the show (I need to get the movies too, actually), but no…

I agree with you both totally! I once wondered what TV would be like without car commercials, but when watch Noggin, I beg and wish for just one damn car commercial to come on! They play the same 5 or 6 commercials for a week, 24/7!! Even the version which comes on at 1 in the morning is edited! Like, piles of 12 year olds will be up watching TV at that hour on a school night!

How difficult is it to take the Daria tape cassettes, which are numbered, line them up in order and play them? What is with this jumping around? I saw what must have been the first Daria, when they moved into town and suddenly the next episode was with Jane and Tom. WTF??!!

Not to mention that I doubt if even kids will like the cheesy Australian kid movies that they must be buying up at 10 cents a casset.

Even kids would get sick of those lame commercial breaks and who the hell wants to know about someone’s locker? Even kids don’t care about that! Where can we write to them so we can call them names for being idiots? A physical address would be best because a lot of these places, thanks to SPAM and the ease of E-mail, do not read every e-mail, but they do when the letters are written.

I want to complain. After all, Daria, as anyone would know, attracts adults, so they knew that going into the showing.

The heathens! Editing Daria! BASTARDS!

I don’t mind if they jumble the order of the Daria episodes.I don’t really mind the same 5 commercials in a row.I do mind the editing of the episodes. Put them on back on MTV or MTV 2 if Noggin feels that certain content is not suitable fot young kids. If Noggin must show them, don’t edit them, damn you.

Noggin’s editing Daria?!?!? Why show them, then? I’ve only caught two or three episodes and even then they didn’t have my complete attention so I didn’t really notice it.

I gotta admit those Degrassi commercials are extremely annoying.

Well, Sesame Workshop has a hand in Noggin so you could try their address at One Lincoln Plaza, New York, NY 10023.

Well, they actually edited an episode’s freakin’ title! “The F-Word” was apparantly a little too much for their viewer’s pwecious wittle ears, and was changed to “Fail” (they didn’t even use the right font).

Their editing of content continues, and is now really annoying for me because I’m finally getting to see some of the last fifth season episodes I missed on MTV (or rather, I’m getting to NOT see them!)

The show is on at 10pm and 1am. What is the problem!

Ooooh, I’m so annoyed at this! A lot of little jokes and entire storylines (Jane at art camp) have been cut! These episodes are on (relatively) late at night, so like a lot of people have said, what’s the problem?

I think it’s a bit hypocritical. They also show that Degrassi series, right? Well, a week or two ago they had an episode where apparently a girl was considering having sex with her boyfriend (I didn’t watch the episode, admittedly, but the entire promo was people going, “well, people have been talking…”, “are you sure you’re ready for such a big step?” and the end ‘disclaimer’ saying that parents should watch this with their children because it deals with a frank discussion of sexual situations). These Degrassi kids are in Junior High, and it’s fine for a 12-13 year old to consider having sex on this show, but not fine for Upchuck on “Daria” to make some semi-lame “sexy” joke?.

That is correct. Noggin is a joint venture of Viacom and Sesame Workshop, not PBS.

Want to write Viacom, too? 1515 Broadway, New York, NY 10036.

You can contact Noggin by going to The-N.com, scrolling to the bottom of the page and there is a link for contacting them. It opens up into a message link that mails them. I’ve already bitched there about Daria and I urge all of you to do the same!!
