This is honestly a sincere question. Does everyone not get one of those ‘mouse over’ option thingies?
[/QUOTE]
The mouseover I was granted stopped at “the blood of” so there was no telling from it what the content of the thread would be. Plus that doesn’t completely solve the problem of folks who post lots of   followed by spaces, followed by a link, or those who begin posts with a quote (anything in quotes doesn’t show up in my mouseover; don’t know if anyone else has that problem).
The issue is really twofold: one, a lack of descriptive title and/or a poorly introduced post leading to posters “stumbling” into topics they’d rather not hear about, and two, the aforementioned “recreational outrage.” Really, what is the point of OPs like this? There’s no discussion, really- who on earth is going to come in and stand up for the perp? There’s the risk of inadvertently “triggering” unsuspecting folks like olive. Most of the people who post here are fairly well-informed and literate; certainly they don’t need to be informed of every horrific crime that comes down the road. And there’s usually (in the RO posts) no connection to the OP, no real reason (other than outrage at yet another example of man’s inhumanity) to bring it to everyone’s attention.
Now, had the OP started with a descriptive title, that would have mitigated circumstances a bit. But I’ll tell you the only way these sorts of things will completely slide by: If someone directly related to the situation posted the OP, or if someone with a history like olive (I apologize for using you as an example) posted an OP that went something like “I came across this link today, about a child being assaulted and murdered. It brought up a lot of unpleasant memories for me, and a lot of questions about why I lived through my ordeal and she didn’t. I’m angry that despite society’s purported “crackdown” on assault on children, that these things continue to happen. What will it take for us to evolve??” (with, of course, more vitrol)
Another example.. the teenage puppy-killers that recently came up in the news are well known to me, for reasons that I can’t reveal due to confidentiality. Now, I stayed far away from the thread about them even though I could have easily posted my own OP ranting about the legal system, mental health care, and puppy-killing, because IMHO it’s too easy. No one likes puppy killers (except perhaps one or two noted SD posters), lots of people can rant about the legal/MH system, and in the end it’s just a waste of time.
::shrug:: It’s a Pit thing, I guess.. I don’t expect it to change any time soon.
