Dark red blood.

This is honestly a sincere question. Does everyone not get one of those ‘mouse over’ option thingies? I’m grateful I do, because I use it to weed out these very sorts of problems; issues that I personally shouldn’t go there, posters who guarantee their being the author of the thread means it’s time not well spent or incoherency, etc. I guess I just kind of figured we all had that ability and therefore don’t have to necessarily stumble into anything we’d rather not.

Is that inaccurate? That maybe some systems don’t allow it?

Have you learned nothing, G? Ask her age first!

I didn’t coin it but I sure think it applies.

faithfool: my browser truncates the tooltip and I’m unmotivated to seek a solution. From what I read on the hover I thought this could’ve been about chemical weapons or at the least something vaguely less uninteresting than the depths of one man’s depravity.

Depends on how they’re prepared doesn’t it? I mean, a lot of people like them ground up on a bun (i.e., “baby burgers”), but I prefer a fine toddler tenderloin served with truffles and a taragon wine sauce.

Yes, in a handbasket, thank you.

::hangs head in shame::

I always use the hover to see what the story is about.

I thought of my niece when I read that and thought this fucker needs to die. The adrenaline didn’t leave we system for and hour, and I had a hot flush that would have looked red in the mrror. Take it for what it’s meant not what you think it’s meant for. I post entertaining content to MPSIMS, be it with swearing or not. I will admit I’m in an emotional mood instead of my logical dispassionate one at this time.

I’m curious about what kind of thread people thought they were getting into when they clicked the words ‘Dark red blood’. I’m thinking it’s a sure bet it’s not somebody whining about their speeding tickets.

The mouseover I was granted stopped at “the blood of” so there was no telling from it what the content of the thread would be. Plus that doesn’t completely solve the problem of folks who post lots of   followed by spaces, followed by a link, or those who begin posts with a quote (anything in quotes doesn’t show up in my mouseover; don’t know if anyone else has that problem).

The issue is really twofold: one, a lack of descriptive title and/or a poorly introduced post leading to posters “stumbling” into topics they’d rather not hear about, and two, the aforementioned “recreational outrage.” Really, what is the point of OPs like this? There’s no discussion, really- who on earth is going to come in and stand up for the perp? There’s the risk of inadvertently “triggering” unsuspecting folks like olive. Most of the people who post here are fairly well-informed and literate; certainly they don’t need to be informed of every horrific crime that comes down the road. And there’s usually (in the RO posts) no connection to the OP, no real reason (other than outrage at yet another example of man’s inhumanity) to bring it to everyone’s attention.

Now, had the OP started with a descriptive title, that would have mitigated circumstances a bit. But I’ll tell you the only way these sorts of things will completely slide by: If someone directly related to the situation posted the OP, or if someone with a history like olive (I apologize for using you as an example) posted an OP that went something like “I came across this link today, about a child being assaulted and murdered. It brought up a lot of unpleasant memories for me, and a lot of questions about why I lived through my ordeal and she didn’t. I’m angry that despite society’s purported “crackdown” on assault on children, that these things continue to happen. What will it take for us to evolve??” (with, of course, more vitrol)

Another example… the teenage puppy-killers that recently came up in the news are well known to me, for reasons that I can’t reveal due to confidentiality. Now, I stayed far away from the thread about them even though I could have easily posted my own OP ranting about the legal system, mental health care, and puppy-killing, because IMHO it’s too easy. No one likes puppy killers (except perhaps one or two noted SD posters), lots of people can rant about the legal/MH system, and in the end it’s just a waste of time.

::shrug:: It’s a Pit thing, I guess… I don’t expect it to change any time soon.

(should’ve previewed…)

Honestly, I thought it would be a medical-type thread (a rant about blood appearing from places blood shouldn’t be, or the OP accidentally cutting himself, or the futility of trying to get blood out of fabric- threads that we’ve certainly seen in here before). Another poster mentioned they were expecting perhaps a post on menstruation. There are other, non-baby-raping reasons to title a post in this manner.

The mods can close the thread if they like, because I got the rant out of me on this subject. I really was mostly at a loss for words anyway. I never managed the rage thing on this because it pissed me off so much. I really was shaking in anger, from the adreniline. It doesn’t seem to be what others are posting about, so close it. The subject can sink into the depths of Hell where this action merits the perpetrator go post haste with great dispatch. I’ve been responding to this tread today, because I feel it rightto do, and curtious. My writing capabilities are getting to be really bad today, and though I think of the words, it’s hard to get them typed in readable form. I don’t know when I be posting agian, so don’t take it as a slight. I’ll be back when I get a bit better. It won’t be tonight and I don’t know about tomorrow. I wish to thank the poster’s for stopping by as all hosts should, even if it wasn’t plesant subject. This is getting to be a nonsensicle ramble. Brain muddled. Bye.

Thanks for you reply. Damn, I’ve got some sort of great Mouse Over plan because it almost gives me like a full paragraph. I’m sorry there are others who have to deal with it stopping before a complete sentence ends or something. That truly sucks. As to those that post little more than a link, that’s what I use it for too. Especially in GD. If they can’t be arsed to add some of their own input, why should I be playing along at home? Unless I’m exceedingly interested in the subject matter, I give those a pass.

I do agree that both the title needed to be more descriptive and the opening salvo more detailed and on point. However, at least with the latter, I understand how if someone is upset, things may tumble out the best they can. As to the whole complaint about ‘recreational outrage’ threads, you see the opposition everyday, meaning I’d think, most people are aware that no one will defend puppy rapists. But equally everyday, there’s one that rants about it. ::: shrug::: I’m assuming most know but feel compelled to address an issue that speaks to them. If I came across a topic about people specifically fucking with agoraphobics, I’d post whether or not it fell within the realm of said “recreational outrage.” It’s a case by case basis type thing, in my humble opinion.

Which, I see, you believe this part just like I do. Amazingly, I read it before I started replying to. I need some Cubis.

Obviously agreed, but… if one person learns something (like how they leave their dogs unattended while they visit their grandma or something), another experiences catharsis or works something out that helps them, I really can’t see that as any more a waste of time than all the other happy/funny/whatever stuff that ends up in other fora. Gotta be doing something.

True, I believe you’re right and just another reason this is my favorite place to hang out.

Firefox has a mouseover plugin that’ll give you the first paragraph/several lines. Vital for the Dope, especially in this case. I didn’t bother with it in this thread, but I’m not particularly offended that I found this in the pit.

What does worry me is how blase (how do I make an accented e?) I was when I read the OP. ‘Sick bastard tortures child to death, ho hum, so the world goes.’

Outrage porn? All that righteous indignation and outrage–lots of adrenalin flowing…

Just a thought.

I didn’t know what this thread was about when I did the rollover thing with my mouse. The dark red color of the print is…interesting.
I am not sure what these threads are supposed to do. I think we can all agree that a person who would do such a thing to a child is one seriously sick bastard/bitch, no?

By no means am I saying we shouldn’t have these threads, I just don’t know what purpose they serve. It’s not like we can do anything to stop this tragedy–it’s already happened–and it’s not like men like this (or women) go around marked as Sick Fuck, Beware! to prevent future ones. I would be interested in learning about studies made of such people, to see if there are ways we can prevent them from doing things like this–that’s a thread I would read.
I am sick with pity for this child. Sometimes I hate the world when I hear stuff like this. But seriously, what do these threads mean?

Well I dunno. Mouseover clearly shows the part about a child being brutally slain.

If people are so completely against reading such a thread then using software with mouseover would be a sensible bet. Because no matter how hard a threadstarter tries to word a title there’s ALWAYS going to be something, somewhere that upsets people. At least with the first couple of paragraphs people can gain a clue as to the general content.

Minor nitpick, but there is no university in Pennsylvania known as Pittsburgh State.

The University of Pittsburgh is a public, state-affiliated university, but is not ‘Pittsburgh State’, nor is it affiliated with the Pennsylvania State University.

of course, your experience w/mouseover is obviously identical to others, right? on my home computer, I use Mozilla, which allows me to increase the size of the type in the window. It doesn’t increase the size of the mouseover In short, the mouseover type size is way too small for me to see.

Oh, and El Cid Viscoso, I’m sorry I ignored you. Seems that somewhere between preview and spell check, my response to you got dropped. I’m just glad to know that more folks have helped to fight my ingnorance. Thank you.

Er, you do realize that when that child first went “missing” it made national news, right? (Note though published on Foxs’ site, it’s an AP story.) There was an amber alert put out for her.

Well, I thought it was about the menstrual cycle, not knowing Harmonious Discord’s gender.

(TMI alert) You see, every month when I am a few hours from starting my cycle I expel a dark colored, almost marroonish liquid. I have terrible cramps in the hours this ensues. When the full flow occurs and the blood is a bright scarlett color the pain dissipates. So, you can see why I assumed this would be an educational menses thread. Oops.

And Giraffe, you can punch Girl Scouts all you like, but leave the damn kittens alone. Ya perv.

Ooo, I love it when you talk dirty to me. I’ll bring my evisceration literature for after dinner…
