Dark Souls 3: Prepare to Keep Dying

Well, it’s around two weeks until Dark Souls 3, the fourth (and, depending on what you read, possibly last) edition in From Software’s most successful game series, is released outside of Japan. I’ve been avoiding any kind of story or game-specific spoilers, but from what I’ve read this installment is intended to be more difficult than the last one. I couldn’t possibly be more psyched for this game - I’ve never actually taken time off from work to play a video game before, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be doing it this time around.

Anyone interested in this? Hopes, expectations, concerns?

(And if you’ve never played any of the Souls series, now’s your chance! Play a Royal in Demon’s Souls, then a Pyromancer in Dark Souls, and then do whatever you want with Dark Souls 2, which kinda sucked by comparison).

Uuuuuuuugh, this series has become like Sonic and bought into its own marketing hype. Demon’s Souls was hard, but its defining quality was more that it was kind of like a slower 3D Zelda/Symphony of the Night mashup. Same for Dark Souls. I can only hope that “difficulty” doesn’t mean “MORE MOOKS” like it did in DkS2. I’m only glad this is the last game and hopefully the new difficulty is simply befitting of a series finale rather than being difficult for the sake of itself.

At least Miyazaki is back on this one, that bodes well. Dark Souls 2 really suffered, IMO. I had fun with it, but it wasn’t my favorite thing.

I’m considering getting it. $60 is really expensive for me right now, but I’ve never played a souls game without spoilers and I’d like the chance, and there’s no way I can avoid spoilers until it goes on summer sale or whatever.

Very much looking forward to it. Dark Souls is one of my favourite games, and the second one was still good even though it fell short of the first one. I’ve tried avoiding spoilers too. My first playthrough is usually with a pure melee character. I feel the Souls series has an exceptionally well designed melee combat system.

So… anyone playing? I got it launch day. As I almost always do, I played through the tutorial and first real area five or six times with different characters to get a feel for the different systems before starting my “official” character (Deprived).

Enjoying it immensely, with just a few very minor reservations. The areas are beautifully designed, and I’ve already had two of those “oh, look, a door, I wonder where that goes OH I’M BACK AT THE BONFIRE” moments that made the first game so much fun. Weapons arts is a really great idea that adds even more variety and depth to the combat system. Some of the story and characters echo previous installments - sometimes a bit more than echo them, actually - but there’s plenty of new ideas here, too.

Thus far, the difficulty has not been as advertised. I’ve soloed three bosses and several mini-bosses, and there hasn’t been one that offered a really Dark Soulsian challenge (the tutorial boss, which was easy with every other character I tried, actually did give me fits when I tried it as a Deprived). I know it’s still early, but still… the third boss I fought in DS1 was the damned Gargoyles; the third boss in Bloodborne was Sister Amelia.

Also, the game has been extremely linear so far, basically on rails. There’s been no question as to where to go, and no option to go anywhere but the next set destination. That appears to maybe be opening up now, and I hope it does because if it continues as it’s been, it will be very disappointing.

My character’s name is Echo and I’m currently helping folks through the third main area, should anyone need a hand.

Having never played any of these games I found myself buying DS3 as I was looking for something to play and a work colleague was very vocal in his love of it.

I am enjoying it very much. Took a few hours to get into it as I consistently got wiped out by the first knight I ran into. After i got a hang of it and started moving forward I started to really like it.

Did the Dancer of the Boreal Valley on my first attempt last night after taking two days to kill Aldrich, Devourer of Gods. I actually jumped up of my couch and punched the air. It was a great moment  Loving it and can’t wait to New Game + it as soon as I finish and clean up some items that I have missed.

I’m playing a character with high vig and endurance adn using an infused dark sword. Will be playing with weapons and characters on future plays.
