Ah, OK, so it’s Tomb of Horrors for consoles. I get it now.
Not quite. It’s sword and sorcery, but it’s much more about being attentive, patient, and learning from your mistakes. People like to play up the difficulty to absurd degrees, like it’s some sadistic luck-based game with bullshit traps that you’ll never see coming (like I Wanna Be The Guy or Tomb of Horrors), but really it’s more on the level of Megaman – sure, you’ll die more often than most modern games, but if you learn from your mistakes and don’t go rushing in like a moron you’ll do fine.
Great game. Very slow moving and tense but I really liked it. I rang the upper bell tower and was making my way to the lower when other games finally called. That game is incredibly hard to “get back into” once you quit for a bit so beware.
'tis the true. I got cursed and was trying to get the Cure Curse spell and the Resist Curse Ring at New Londo Ruins. Then I bought Skyrim…
One advantage of Dark Souls is that dying isn’t Game Over. You can get splattered without losing your progress, though you’ll definitely lose something. Additionally, players still argue about which ending is the “good” and “bad” ones. Let’s just say the usual, “Blind self-sacrifice always works!” concept may not apply at all.
For people that played Demon’s Souls, how does this compare? I had heard such good things about it [Demon’s] that I picked it up when I saw it on sale for 15 bucks one time. I put in several hours, but the game was so inexplicable that I couldn’t even figure out what the basic mechanics were. I had visited different areas and managed to kill a few demons, but I never grasped the alive/dead mechanic and how to use it, never figured out what those 5 pillars on the menu screen were supposed to indicate or inform me of, ect.
It actually was really frustrating to me because I can tell some people have figured it out and gotten a lot of enjoyment from it, but I’m not sure I have the patience to stumble from one trial and error dungeon to another without any idea of what I’m actually doing there. Is Dark Souls in a similar category or is there a better idea of what you are doing and how mechanics relate to gameplay?
