Darkseids Omega beams. Natural ability or are they a body mod he created for himself?

Well?

He got 'em on eBay. He bid one bleem and no-one had the guts to go higher.

Nah, It’s a body mod. He bought the omega beams and got his nipples pierced for free.

WAG!: I have never seen any evidence that the Omega Effect is a technological achievement so I have always assumed it to be some sort of supernatural ability Darkseid specifically gained as a means to pacify his subjects/foes as leader of Apokolips. Note that no one else on Apokolips or New Genesis seems to have that ability, or to be able to resist it. One nice bit in a feat of otherwise undesirable character and situational wonkiness that John Byrne did in his stint as a Superman writer was to have Darkseid try to zap Superman with the Omega Effect and end up zapping himself. As Darkseid arises charred from the Effect, Superman says, “I didn’t expect you to survive that,” and Darkseid goes, “My body couldn’t contain the Omega Effect if it couldn’t resist it.” More evidence that the power is somehow innate.

WAG2: I have always assumed that the Omega Effect is somehow related to the Anti-Life Equation Darkseid was hunting for, but my understanding of the Anti-Life is even more tenuous than the Omega Effect.

Fenris will be around to set things straight. He always does.

I seem to remember that Doomsday took the omega beams at one point and proceeded to beat the stuffing out of Darkseid. I’m not sure that I like that so much, but that’s the way they wrote it.

I’m sure that sucks. Sounds like Dan Jurgens crap writing, too.

Anyone else care to comment about Darkseld’s Omega Effect?

Yes. It really, really hurts.

Judging from his victims’ reaction, it does seem to be fairly painful.

Durned if I can cite it, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that Darkseid seized the Omega Effect as his own upon ascending to rulership of Apokolips, around the time he bumped off his mother; it apparently went along with the office, since they didn’t have a crown or orb or anything.

Then again, considering the sort of place Apokolips is, “crown” seems less appropriate than “death rays fired from eyeballs” as a symbol of power and rulership…

Okay. I got the skinny.

According to this site, the Omega Effect was an ability gained from the Infinity Pit of Apokolips – and originally was the birthright of Darkseid’s brother, Drax. Darkseid killed Drax and stole the Omaga Force for himself; the pit’s energies transformed his entire body and gave him the stony, rock faced contenenace he has to this day. This transformation is critical to allow his body to both contain and resist the Omega Force within himself.

The Omega Effect allows Darkseid to lock on to his target and produce swift moving beams of white light that follow their intended target wherever they go; once the effect strikes their target, the target either disintegrates or is teleported, depending on what darkseid wants. Darkseid also has the power to restore anything he disintegrates via the Effect.

Among the few beings that have proven resistant to the Omega Effect are Darkseid himself and the altered Kryptonian known as Doomsday.
