Darth Vader - Why is he is the little Star Destroyer at the beginning of Jedi?

Why isn’t he on board his Super Star Destroyer?

I don’t know why, but you asked why he was the little star destroyer.

It made me laugh.

[Wild Justification]
The smaller destroyer was on patrol when it found the princess. He flew out to it on a shuttle to oversee the operation.

[Reality]
Lucas hadn’t thought of making an even bigger ship yet.

Sorry.

At the beginning of ‘return of the jedi’??

I don’t remember the plot well enough to come up with a guess, but I would imagine there are dozens of possible reasons why a high commander (which is about Vader’s position in the fleet, just under the emperor,) would be on a mid-size ship instead of the flagship at any particular point in time.

Maybe we don’t have enough information to find out.

Especially since I’m not aware of a great number of differences in the imperial fleet - they’re portrayed as standardized and interchangeable white hulks, but I imagine there are probably some subtle differences… weaponry, hyperspace speed, what have you.

It had a better food court.

Yeah, I laughed at the “why is he the little Star Destroyer”

I would guess maybe because he wanted to keep his arrival secret, the CO of the Death Star did express surprise at his appearance after all. That or the smaller Star Destroyers are perhaps faster than the larger flagship.

Sorry because you made me laugh? Please. I should be thanking you.

Shmi: “Who’s a little Star Destroyer? Annie’s a little Star Destroyer! Now, open the hangar bay doors… open them wide… turn on the tractor beam… here comes a little bit of bantha! Wrrrmmmmrrrrmrmrmrmrrm…”

His was in the shop. It was a loner.

Which, of course, (tangentially speaking) one of the best lines from Street Fighter. Bison is looking at the plans for his headquarters, and tells someone, “I think the food court should be bigger. All of the major chains will want to get in on this.”

Actually, I can think of a couple of reasons why Vader would arrive on an “ordinary” SD. The first is protocal. If the Empire has basically two kinds of SDs, the regular and the SSD, you wouldn’t want a government official like Vader, arriving on an SSD if the Emperor was going to be arriving on one as well. The second is security. The Rebel fleet might ignore an SD, because they wouldn’t think that it was worth the risk, but they spot an SSD and they think, “Ooooooh! Vader might be on that, let’s blow it up!”

Though I think the most realistic explaination is that Lucas had already done his recto-cranial insertion at this point, and thus blew it.

Wrong movies. He’s talking about the third one, not the first one.

Also remember that the location of the second Death Star is supposed to be a secret. The Rebels probably keep constant tabs on the location of the Imperial Flagship, so Vader using the Executor to taxi him to the top secret military location would be a bad idea*. Plus, pulling the Executor off the front lines to run an errand to a secret location (presumably) deep in friendly territory where no enemies are expected to show up any time soon would be a poor use of resources. So, Vader leaves the Executor where it can be highly visibile blasting rebel ships into flinders or terrorizing planetary populations or whatever, sneaks onto a shuttle to a smaller SD, and runs off on his secret inspection tour.

(*Yes, I know the Emperor had already deliberately leaked the location of the DSII to the Rebels. He still needs to act like he doesn’t know the Rebels know about the new Death Star.)

The SSD is there when the Rebels show up on the Imperial Shuttle (Vader is on the SSD at this point), so the secret thing doesn’t work out.

“I shall call him… mini-Star Destroyer.”

I am become Death, Little Star Destroyer.

I think it’s reasonable to assume that Vader has political duties that extend beyond simply commanding the Imperial Fleet. His title is “Lord” not “Admiral”. It’s probably safe to also assume that the Executor is not his personal car service and is placed on station wherever it’s presence is required.

So in other words, when it’s convienient, Vader puts his flag on the Executor. When it’s not, he just travels along with whatever imperial ship is convienient.

“Open the tractor bay doors, Darth. Open the tractor bay doors, Darth.”
“I’m sorry, Obi-wan, but I can’t do that.”
