David Bowie in Chicago - Not now but in 1980.

Anyone remember?

No I do not, since I was not born then. Is there reason it was special, did he not tour a lot in the United States?

I missed the performance but always heard he was really good, as the link points out, in the Elephant Man. That and he hung out with locals during his stay.

Oh. The city. Not the band.

I now have an earworm of Bowie singing “Saturday in the Park”.

I was 10, so no. But, I will be going to the David Bowie Is exhibit, can’t wait.

I went last week. The best $25 I’ve spent at a museum in some time. Try going during the week to avoid crowds. Our tour took 2 1/2 hours. Bring your reading glasses and take your time. I thought I knew a lot about Bowie before the show. The guy was really prolific. One fun exhibit is a room where you can sit and are shown 3 minute clips of all of his movie performances.

Fun stuff. Pace yourself.

Ooh, thanks for that! I’ve recently acquired progressive lenses, so reading is now built in (so happy with them I started a thread - dork, I know). I’ll make sure to tell my friend to have hers.

We will go most likely on a Thursday, will spend time in the rest of the museum, make it a day. Puck’s has a special Bowie-themed menu Thu-Sat every week during the exhibit, so we plan to do dinner there, too.

Gee, what should I order?

Cat People - yellow fin tuna tartare, sesame chips, ponzu, and deviled quail egg - $14

Under Pressure - grilled hanger steak, fingerling potato salad, charred scallions, truffle, and balsamic gastrique - $16

Hope the weather is nice enough so you can eat outside.

Bring sensible shoes and a sandwich too. On the downside, when leaving the exhibit you get dumped into the “Bowie Emporium” - Bowie mugs, Bowie fridge magnets, Bowie condums, you name it. The same stuff that made him ill when he visited museums in Chicago in 1980 (see the link in the OP). Note: Bowie had nothing to do with the exhibit. A curator at a museum in Washington DC told me she knows the curator at the MCA and it took a lot to get him to sign off on every object being displayed.

There’s a nice video of him doing mime work at age 20 (the face). Watch it. He was actually quite good and he carried that forward throughout his career. (“Heroes” album cover and Iggy’s “The Idiot” album cover).

The Alexander McQueen Union Jack coat (peek around to see the front) and the Costume from the Aladdin Sane Tour (you’ll know it when you see it) are too cool.

'Nuff said. If I still lived in Chicago I would have gone to see it again in about a month.

Pax.

I saw Bowie in The Elephant Man in Chicago back then. He was terrific. He used minimal makeup, minimal costuming. Simply by adjusting the posture of his rather nice body he suggested one terribly deformed convincingly. It was amazing.
Oh, and I concur – the audience very definitely was not the typical theatre-going one.

I should have added this (its my favorite):

Bowie at Shoreline Amphitheatre for the Bridge School in Mountain View, Ca., 1996.
