Is my “Ask The Gay Guy!” thread too long? Personally, I never have any problems loading it, but I don’t know what the tech specs are on such long threads.
I’d just as soon leave it as it is, but if it is too long, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEdon’t just close it!!! I’d like to start the new thread myself, post a link to the new thread as the last post in the old thread, and then you can close it. Can we time it this way if this is the case?
Esprix: IMO–With the old UBB I would have said, “close it and start a new one,” but now that we have the option right upfront of picking which page to go to, I would say just leave it, it’s fine.
Notthemama, with the UBB software, we were told that threads that were too long (for example the old Guy Stuff thread) were causing problems and might have contributed to board slowdowns and crashes.
I coulda swore Esprix asked for a judgement call from a moderator.
Notthemama, I’ll be happy to send you an application. However, I can’t vouch that your moderating experience on this board will earn you extra credit in the vetting process.
Your good intentions are duly noted. But please do not attempt to speak for us, because, well, you don’t. Many questions asked on the board (like this one) cut across technical and procedural lines and unless you work here, you couldn’t possibly know all the ramifications. Moderators are guided by management and by the technical department in how we handle things; in these working-out-the-bugs days, that changes, sometimes as often as we change underwear. Without having that grounding (or the training moderators go through), advising people on our policies is not helpful.
That’s ok, Tuba - I know he was just trying to be helpful, but I’d never attempt anything without moderator input and/or approval (as if I could close a thread anyway).
Still waiting, though, for one of the boys to get back to me on this…
No sweat, I hadn’t commented on this because we were waiting on a ruling from Jerry on this issue.
You’re all very much correct that long threads were a serious problem on the UBB software and in fact played a significant role in us moving to the vB program.
Jerry sez: “I don’t think there are going to be problems with long threads.”
Well, so far, anyway; if that changes, we’ll tell you.
So I guess y’all can go hog wild now.

Ask the Gay Guy ANYTHING!
('Cause we can handle it.)
Esprix did write: Still waiting, though, for one of the boys to get back to me on this…
to which Gaudere responded: ::ahem::
But I wonder if this was actually a reference to Cecil’s column What’s up with the “lost books of the Bible”?, which includes a discussion of the following somewhat controversial verse from the Gospel According to Thomas:
114 Simon Peter said to them, “Make Mary leave us, for females don’t deserve life.” Jesus said, “Look, I will guide her to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every female who makes herself male will enter the kingdom of Heaven.”
'Sokay, Esprix. BTW, let David and I know if the Gay Guy thread starts to exhibit any unusual behavior; since we’re working from a database thread size shouldn’t really be an issue, but the vBulletin guys may not have fully anticipated the wordiness of our TM. The Gay Guy thread is the longest one we have right now [insert joke about gay men always being longer anyhow] and it’ll be a good test of the ability of the new software to handle it.
Perhaps. But he’s got a long way to go before his thread surpasses the legendary (belch, scratch) “Guy Stuff” thread, which was into, what, its 21st or 22nd page before the mods closed it just in time to save civilization.
Otto was the one that originally complained it was taking him so long to load the page (which I don’t understand, as mine breaks it up into pages and loads one at a time, so starting a new thread wouldn’t solve the problem, but maybe his ISP or his software or something is screwy), which is why I asked you guys. Well, evidently he’s still having the problem, because he went and started the GGII thread (which kind of pissed me off, but let’s see what happens first).
So - is it just him, or is this a vB problem?
If it IS a vB problem, then the second thread is fine, but I’d like to CLOSE Otto’s 2nd thread and let me re-start it, as I have a specific way of doing it in mind.
Also, am I being a bitch about this? I mean, I’m certainly not the only gay person on this board, but the idea was originally mine, so I really do think of it as “my thread.” Is this wrong? Do I sound like a pompous ass?
So far, Eaprix has cursed my name in two different threads, an IM and an email. There is no way I could be any sorrier that I dared trespass into the holy ground of establishing a GG2 thread without his permission. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, I promise I won’t do it again.
This new software has consistently been much much slower for me, and the more pages there are, the longer it takes to load. ATGG routinely takes two minutes or more to load, and I’ve seen a number of other “part 2” threads. Who knew this was going to be such a trauma? FWIW, I don’t care what happens to the GG2 thread I started. Lock it, unlock it, link it, unlink it, bury it in sand and plant a flag on it.
Once again, Otto, I do apologize for jumping all over you. You just took me by surprise.
I have opened up “Ask the Gay Guy II!” with all the bells and whistles I originally had in mind, and have asked DavidB or Gaudere to close the original “Ask the Gay Guy!” thread.
