I have a strange personality quirk. I hate doing housework, almost with a religious zeal, but I love buying cleaning “gadgets”. In fact, the only thing that properly motivates me to get a good cleaning done is discovering some new thing in the cleaning aisle.
Last night, it was Dawn Wash 'n Toss. I’d never seen these before, and because I watch less than an hour of TV a month, I’d never even heard of them before. But I needed a new dish sponge anyway - that’s why I was in the aisle in the first place - and they caught my eye. Actually, the Palmolive version caught my eye first, but I’m a Dawn devotee so I sought them out.
Now as much as I love a good cleaning innovation, I am always fairly skeptical - which is why I threw one of my beloved SOS sponges into the carriage anyway. But these disposable things… They could be great! I hate the fact that sponges get so nasty so quickly, even though I clean mine scrupulously after every use, and nuke them once a week to kill any residual germs. That and my method of dishwashing isn’t likely to be found in the Good Homemaker’s Bible (or whatever book they would list things like “Proper Dishwashing Form” in). I basically rinse off the dishes, turn on the water, and wash the dishes with my well-soaped sponge under a stream of hot water. The problem with this method is, I end up rinsing most of the soap off the sponge after two plates or so, and by the time I’ve washed a sinkload of dishes, I’ve used a half cup of detergent.
These new pads have soap embedded in them - and I was definitely skeptical that 3 stripes of soap could possibly endure my dishwashing technques.
Friends… Brothers and sisters… I have seen the light. As soon as I got the little buggers home, I attacked my sinkful of dishes with a vigor heretofore unseen in my home. I put the SOS sponge under the sink, and grabbed one of these little beauties and tackled the task at hand. It performed beautifully - one side is smooth, and the other appears to have some sort of plastic twine woven through it for scouring. Now I didn’t have any really difficult dishes to wash, but there was some dried on food, and my new discovery performed beautifully. And not once did I need to resoap - in fact there was just enough left over when all the dishes were done for me to use it to wipe down my sink and countertops. Rinsed the last bubbles of soap from the pad and rinsed the soap from the counter, tossed the thing away and voila. All was done.
So I’m a convert. I spent 2.88 at Walmart on 20. At the rate that I’ll be saving soap, and the rate at which I go through dish sponges, they will more than pay for themselves. Unfortunately, like most cleaning innovations that I actually get use out of, these will probably disappear from the shelves one day.
Time for me to go out and hoard some!
