Day in NYC...what to see?

For my birthday in a few weeks, I got tickets to the Downton Abbey exhibit in NYC, so Hallgirl 1 and I are spending the day there. The exhibit is at 218 w 57th street, and our tickets aren’t until 2:30, so any suggestions on what might be close by (or close by the subway we’ll take from Penn Station)? Any recommended places nearby to eat lunch or dinner (that won’t break the bank)?

It’ll be the first week in January, so I’m assuming it will be colder than balls, so anything inside is preferred.

Funny, I just saw a job listing for a docent for that exhibit. Sounds fun!

Anyway, you’ll be near Columbus Circle, which is a tad ritzy, but you should have no problem finding a place to eat. You can even walk around the Columbus Circle Mall, if you want an indoor window shopping experience. If you like Mexican food, try Rosa Mexicano on 62nd and Columbus. Enjoy!

You could go gawk at Trump Tower and bask in its ominous shadow.

Yeah, I saw that was in the area. Don’t think I’ll be headed that way…

The Hippodrome, the Flora Dora Girls and the Woolworth Tower.

Museum of Natural History is like Jurassic Park: They have a T-Rex.

It’s up on the fourth floor.

Not any more.

Tour of Carnegie Hall at 57th and 7th Avenue?

For lunch I lurve Aba Turkish Restaurant. 325 W. 57th, just a few blocks down from Carnegie and not far from the Downton Abbey exhibit.

There’s a funny little food court under 8th avenue that you can get to from the A or C trains (the ones you’ll take uptown from Penn Station) or from the street. It’s also half a (long) block from your exhibit.

If it’s so cold you can’t stand it, as previously mentioned, the Time Warner Center is nearby. There’s a Whole Foods in the basement if you want to snack there.

Rockefeller Center has a great view from the top (“Top of the Rock”). MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) is also in that general area.

I’d really like to micturate on that building, but not enough to be arrested for it. Is there enough cover allow for this in most cases?

oooh, this is right up my alley. Thanks!

No. I know you’re not serious, but Trump Tower is surrounded by cops, Secret Service people, concrete barriers and about a zillion people gawking. Or sometimes protesting.

It’s a pain in the ass if you work nearby, as I do.

Well, there goes my vacation.

What did you end up doing? I imagine it was pretty cold out?

Due to the weather (frigid cold) and not being able to leave the animals in that type of weather for so long, we rescheduled. We’re going the end of March when (knock on wood) the weather will be warmer.

What with the tsunami warnings, beat to check the weather first.

Did I hear right?
Did you say the Hippodrome?

This sounds great, will have to try it!

Smart move. I’ve been in NYC in January and February. Nothing is colder.

And you’re from Alberta?? I’d say Chicago was the only place that made me scared to go out in the winter. That wind!
