Daylight Saving Time

It’s obvious that people are never going to agree on this stuff. Some people are simply too dense to realize that Standard Time sucks and 6:30 am isn’t a time anyone should be up unless they deliver papers or make donuts for a living.

It is clear that the current time zone breakdowns aren’t precise enough just being at the national, regional, or state level. People should be able to decide which timezone works best for them. For example, I grew up in the Central Time Zone but now live in the Eastern Time Zone. I still think the Central Time Zone is better so why shouldn’t I be able to keep it? If the boss tells me, I have to be at work by 8 am, that is fine but it should be based on the time zone I prefer. This system has lots of potential for abuse however. People could easily lie about being late by claiming that they are now observing some whacked out time zone in India where they use 30 minute increments or even Djibouti where others would have no idea what they do there. The way around this is to issue little time-zone wallet cards with the individuals time-zone preference embedded on it. The preference can only be changed twice a year and is then fixed until the next time change.

You can say what you like about our State Bird, but I will merely retort that they like beer nearly as much as I do but it’s much worse for them than it is for me. Neener neener, in other words, and likewise “pbbbthh!!!”

Yeah, but you have to deal with the twice-yearly “DST sucks” threads!

And let me be the first to welcome you to the Valley!

Sunset is around 6:30 I think today, from what I looked about it online. Maybe a couple minutes later. So yeah, you’re right, I never really thought about it though. Huh.
Learn/Notice something new every day.

I’m looking forward to driving home in the daylight his evening. I didn’t have anyplace to be yesterday, and my dog didn’t even wake me up. I live DST myself.

The Onion has an article for everything:

Well, I can’t blame them, DST does suck. At least next time I can point and laugh from the sidelines.

Thanks! I am looking forward to it. I have been in Tennessee for 15 years now, and I am still not used to the weather.

Heck, a winter without snow is like…um…death. I can’t imagine not wanting more snow anytime before May.

For those of us who like our eight hours sleep to start around 9 pm, DST stinks.

Drapes, my friend, good drapes.

Y’all are crazy. Standard time sucks, DST time forever!

ETA: that y’all is for all of you promoting CST, not just Frank. Before some of you silly yankees use this as an example or somethin’.

Nobody really cares what the heck time they use. They just need to leave it same day after day.

I so agree. I have thought about blocking off the windows to my bedroom, but feared that the next time I get lucky it would freak the woman out…

Try working a 12 hour night shift that turns into a 13 hour one. I’ve done it and it truly does suck.

I think it’s stupid. I’ve never understood the argument re the kids walking to school in the dark. It’s not really dark by the time small children are going to school. Plus, that afternoon deepening dusk in November is depressing as hell. I don’t see the need for changing. And how come my atomic clock did not reset itself? It’s supposed to “key off” of the one in Pueblo, CO–did that one not change?

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who likes her sleep and likes it to start relatively early.

My atomic clock actually backed up four hours yesterday. At 4:30 it told me it was 3:30 (par for the course); at 5:30 it claimed it was 12:30.

Today it’s blissfully back to one hour slow. It’ll be right in a month or so.

So if that night’s stay is an hour less than any other of the year, I suppose they charged you less for it? I wonder what would have happened if you’d asked for that portion to be refunded?

I agree with that in a way. I meant more about the torrential blizzards, though, when brought in a more negative light. Personally I’d love a snowy Christmas.

I know the problem - your atoms are broken.

My two atomic clocks did fine, and so did my solar powered atomic clock wristwatch.

Daylight Saving Time is dumb. There’s no point to it and no energy saved now that people’s lives don’t revolve around the sun. It was probably fine during the times when there was nothing to do after dark but fuck or sleep.

And while we’re at it, the whole corporate trend of moving the start of the work day up slowly so that what was once 9-5 with only the extremely hardcore and dedicated showing up at 8 am for breakfast meetings is now a solid 8-5 with the encouragement to actually show up earlier than that and OH MY GOD how dare you eat your breakfast at work because you’re now getting up in the middle of the god damn night to get to work on time bullshit should be stopped too.

There is no rational, logical reason to force software engineers to sit at a desk for 9+ hours as if they are clock-punching shift workers. The customer would be happier if I wrote the code at 3 am when I have an idea anyway.

Both of these ideas had to have been implemented by middle management.

You do realize you’re not required to live in Pittsburgh, right? Every time we visit my mom’s family up there in the winter I ask her why the hell people still live there where there are other places to live, with jobs even, and she says she has no idea anymore. She figures they just don’t know any better and they’re scared of flat land with houses that don’t look like they’re hanging on by their fingernails. Also, she thinks they hate buying beer at the grocery store.
