If you were in charge, would we: Keep it? Ditch it? Ditch standard time and leave the clocks where they are now, forever?
Ditch it entirely. Not at all worth the hassle.
Ditch standard time. It’s a far better zone to be in.
Fuck.
The annual thread on daylight saving time.
I love daylight saving time, it allows me to do outdoor activities, such as get in 9 holes of golf after work.
I think it becomes more important the farther one gets from the equator.
If those are my only options, I vote get rid of it.
I don’t have a problem with it in the summer, but it is too long leading to cold, dark mornings at the beginning and end. I’d suggest about 4 months centered on Jun 21.
I prefer daylight saving time. I would vote to stay on it year round.
Pick one and stick with it. Don’t care which one.
DST, so Leaffan can golf
Ditching DST would mean that I’d either get sunrise at 4:40am in the summer or 8:50am in the winter. No thanks. Keep it for sure.
Exactly.
If I were ditching one, it would be standard. I love DST in the summer.
Same for me. The changes are annoying, bordering on idiotic.
Ditch Standard time. Have no need for extra daylight in the morning. If it really IS for kids going to school in the morning, well I could grumbly agree to keep it.
Me too. Standard time means in mid-December it gets dark just after 4pm. I’d much rather it be dark on my way into work than dark before I leave.
I’m guessing you don’t have kids.
Ditch it all, and go on GMT. Who the heck cares what we call any particular hour? Schools and businesses can alter their hours a couple of times a year if they care, and leave the rest of us out of it.
This. Exactly this.
More important? I live a bit past 61 N and daylight saving time is completely pointless this far from the equator because the normal changes to day length are far greater than paltry 1 hour. Days go from 5 hours to 21 hours, DST only accelerates the inevitable by 2 weeks or so. Not worth the hassle.
I was OK with it when Standard Time was more than just Nov - Mar. For one, it needs to be dark early on Halloween for the trick-or-treaters. But it’s just so damn dark in the AM during Oct the way things are now.
What I’d really like, since nearly all clocks are computerized nowadays anyway, would be for every clock to set to exactly 6:00 at dawn of every day. This would mean that every location would be at a different time, but computers could be programmed to compensate for that, too. We’d have the same amount of daylight every morning, as much as we could get in the evening, and there’d be no sudden discontinuities.
