Days getting shorter

It’s 2101, and sunset isn’t for another 18 minutes. But every day the sun will set earlier for the next six months.

Summer hasn’t even started yet!

One would think that’s true, but it’s apparently not: Phoenix, Arizona - Sunrise Sunset Calendar

Well, what do you know? Looks like its shortening from the other end. So the sun will set a minute later until the end of the month – but will rise later, too. I did not know that.

I plugged in my lat/longs and found out the longest day of the year lasts for ten days straight. The Sun rose the earliest beginning June 12th through the 19th, with the Sun setting the latest from June 20th to June 29. The combination says an exact maximum hours/minutes of daylight runs from June 17th through June 26th.

There’s still variation from day to day in that span; it’s just too small to notice at a resolution of minutes.

Yeah.

If IIRC the earliest/latest sunrises/sunsets and the longest/shortest days of the year all occur on different days.

And that’s because the Earth’s orbit around the Sun is not a perfect circle.

Thank gods. The sun is up at like 4:30 in the morning, and doesn’t go down til around 10 at night. I’ve been panicking about being late to work for over a month now, and have been feeling a bit discombobulated when I see the sun still blaring when I leave happy hour. I know everyone else likes it, but I’m sick of the sun being out every single moment that I’m awake.

In an earlier incarnation I must have been a worshipper of Ra - or a cold-blooded lizard. I HATE it when the days start getting shorter. And here I sit with my hand in a cast for the past 3 weeks and the next 4, unable to golf, swim, or bike… Grumble.

I misread this and thought you were posting from the far future!

Or possibly narrating a sci-fi action movie trailer.

2 days of summer are two days too many for me. Bring on autumn!!!

I’m with you. I can appreciate a nice sunny day, but it doesn’t have to be a nice sunny day at 5AM. Ugh.

It’s 2101? News to me.

(Don’t feel bad. I keep writing the year as 2100 myself).

Nights filled with longer hours!

Sez who? Why should the solstice be considered the Official First Day of Summer? I think that’s bullshit—and Cecil agrees.

Finally! People look at me like I’m insane when I say I want the sun to go away. “Are you mad?” they ask me. “Stop it! Stop wishing the sun away,” they say with their hands covering their ears. I like the sun; we’re pals. I like when he accompanies on my bike rides, or to lunches on the patio. If he’s not there when I’m going to the beach, I’m downright pissed, but enough is enough. Can a gal get some shade? Can he please stop bursting through my windows at 5 in the morning? Does he have to tag along until minutes before bedtime?

It was 21:01. Better?

You obviously don’t live in the Pacific Northwest! :stuck_out_tongue:

Seems to me the obvious solution is to keep drinking longer.

Really, did you have to do this? Because I feel exactly the same way.

It’s a good thing I don’t watch too much commercial television, because if I did I’m sure I would start seeing back-to-school and fall fashion special commercials starting this afternoon. One such commercial from a few years ago, which I absolutely and completely loathed with every fiber of my being, showed people in business clothes (suits, even), walking on a beach near the water’s edge. I don’t know why it bothered me that much; it just did.

I don’t like it when the days start getting shorter, but I HATE with an uncontrollable, burning passion the back-to-school ads. Why must they start so early in the summer?! I don’t want to be reminded that I have to go back to school. It’s bad enough that I spend the term wishing my life away without you wishing my holidays away! Piss off!
