If any of you are going to attend the festivities on the Mall on July 4, please write and tell me it’s still great fun and the fireworks and music are still splendid.
I get really homesick this time of year. [sniffs loudly]
Thanks.

When I was in high school we’d go down in the afternoon and hang out. I don’t really know why we did that; I called it “The Big Sweat.” Later we got smarter and just went downtown before dark. Our secret was to park at the Watergate.
I’m not going this year, but I went the last couple and yes, it’s still lovely. There’s always great fun to be had all over the city, not just on the Mall.
My dog freaks out over the fireworks, so we have to get out of town. This July 4, I’m in Afghanistan, so if they’re fireworks, they’ll likely include shrapnel.
I remember going to see the Beach Boys back when they played on the Mall on the fourth.
Remember them well. Come home safe.
Thanks so much for replying. Left a chunk of my heart there. I once had the Jefferson Memorial and the Tidal Basin with the cherry trees in full bloom, all to myself at sunrise.
Ok, back to reality.
I’m not heading to the Mall this year, but this is the best weather that has ever existed on July 4th in DC. It’s about 80 degrees with a mild breeze and fairly low humidity.
Enjoy it while it lasts. The humidity is the one thing I don’t miss.
Last year my wife was out of town on the fourth and I didn’t get myself organized to take my dog somewhere for the weekend. I ended up reading in bed with her whimpering next to me, when I looked out my bay widow and discovered that I had a really nice view of the fireworks on the Mall. We’ve been there 10 years and just discoverd that.
It’s our own fault for having a dog with PTSD, we had her with us in Kabul and a car bomb blew out our bedroom window. Ever since then, she’s been a little jumpy.
Can’t you just watch the celebration on tv? I go to the Mall every year while my dog cowers beside me!
No, I usually take the dog out of the city on the fourth, precisely so she doesn’t hear fireworks. I just didn’t get organized last year and ended up staying in DC. That’s when I accidentally found out that my bedroom window has a nice view of the fireworks on the Mall.
ZipperJJ: Don’t have tv and watching the 4th on YouTube isn’t quite the same.
Madmonk 28: I think I’d be a little jumpy, too, after a bomb explosion. Poor dog. One of the office buildings I worked in had a roof terrace; great for watching fireworks.
Thanks, everyone.
