End 9, DLH had a couple moments, but give it to FM, more active, DLH seeminly fading a bit… FM4, DLH3, whoknows2.
noone cut or eyes closing. Lederman has it 87-84 FM.
Merchant has it 5-4 FM.
Sounds like DLH needs a KO now.
FM just staying away, flicking at DLH. meh.
End 10. Give it to FM just for still being slippery. FM5, DLH3, draw2. DLH may need a KO.
Lampley says it is becoming a “sparing session” for FM.
End 11. Give it to FM just for being slippery again, staring to pose a bit, oooo DLH lands at end, got FM attention…
Meh, after 11 FM6, DLH3, either way 2.
End 12. DLH “knows he need ko”, but FM is just too skilled for it. Call it fairly even again, after late flurry by DLH, but still FM round. Decent fight I guess, nothing heroic, not worth the ppv. Didn’t save boxing, hehe. FM7, DLH3, either way 2. Let’s go to the scorecards…
115-113 Dlh, 116-112 Fm, 115-113 Fm, Fm Wins.
I found a bar a walk from my house showing this.
I enjoyed the fight. I also saw the Rocky Juarez fight right before it, ans that was a pretty good bout, too.
Enjoyed the DLH fight. DLH did what he had to do. . .kept coming forward, pressed the action, but I agreed with the decision.
The bar I was in got packed, and the owner shut and locked the door when he hit the fire code numbers. Shut and LOCKED it! Ridiculous. Spent $20 on beer, and no cover, so it was better than getting it at home, but I’ll have to watch the replay next week for a more detailed look at it. That’s a lot of fun seeing a bunch of folks pyshced up over a boxing match.
Anybody catch Jim Lampley’s little post-fight dis on MMA?
This on the heels of Mayweather’s own comments on MMA:
Kinda reminds me of the old George Carlin joke: “And now, a word from the National Apple Institiute…fuck pears!”
I didn’t see any of that but it’s an interesting discussion. I’ll come down squarely on the fence.
FWIW, I find both sports entertaining, but I’ve always thought that the boxing abilities of the MMA guys should be better.
I’d like to see a guy who is a great boxer go into MMA instead of having a guy learn MMA from the ground up (so to speak). (someone will probably point out one of them)
I think that 10+ years from now when MMA is more established and attracts better athletes, they’ll look back and scoff at the hand skills of the guys who are the champs today.
You see the occasional KO from a good punch in the first round, but given the defense of some of these guys, you really should see more of it. But, it’s hard to say how aggressive you can really be with your hands when the other guy has the ability to grapple and kick.
Yeah. It’s apples and oranges, but I think even most honest MMA fighters would admit that their boxing skills aren’t on par with top level boxers (or they’d be boxing and making millions on purses instead of six digit figures!). I know a few amatuer MMA fighters who have tried to make the transition into straight boxing and gotten their asses handed to them. Boxers have the best hands, hands down.
That sword cuts both ways, though. You’re right, it is harder to be aggressive with your hands when the other guy has thew ability to grapple and kick, and on top of that, the ref isn’t going to separate you in the clinch. You’re stuck with it and with whatever knees and takedowns it may bring, so there’s a lot greater incentive to fight from the outside, which is part of the reason the punches in MMA look so loopy. Floyd is a world class athlete and will go down as one of the greats, but if he thinks he could just tra-la-la into an octagon with no experience whatsoever in kicking range, working the clinch, takedown defense, or ground fighting…well, I’d pay to see it.
