I was just dealt ten hearts, including the high seven cards of the suit, in a 13-card hand of the game Hearts, in a computer game. I have played thousands of hands of hearts, and I’m pretty certain that I’ve never had more than eight of any suit before. Has anyone here had 13 of a suit?
I got 12 of a suit (in a live game) once. I still lost, though, because the one other card was the 10 of hearts.
(To clarify, I played with a group of people who played it so much that shooting the moon was practically the only goal. Just trying to keep your score low would mean you must have a poor hand or were a rookie. Thus the hand I had was one of the worst for our style of play, but I had to at least try.)
Never had 13 of a suit, but I’ve had 10 and some high cards in off suits. I’d been playing a lot of bridge before that game of hearts, and when I looked at my hand, I realized that if I could get someone to pitch me the queen of spades, I could claim the rest of the tricks and shoot the moon. It was sweet.
Did you actually capture the queen though? Since any good hearts player will rarely pass the queen unless they have no backup for it. It’s why MS hearts is so annoying. They programmed the computer players to always pass the queen and always pass high hearts. Therefore all-but-guaranteeing that someone can shoot the moon. I rarely pass hearts, since they’re usually the easiest cards to get rid of. On top of that, having a high heart or two is nice to stop someone from shooting. And if you to pass them (or are trying to short yourself of them), never pass high ones without a low one.
Pretty much if I pass you three hearts, expect I’m trying to shoot the moon with another suit. Because it’s easier to shoot without hearts than with them.
