Oh, please God, if ever a movie project needs to fall to tiny pieces, it’s this one. Apparently both Jim Carrey and Adam sandler are mulling over offers/being considered for the role of Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau in a re-make of one of the Pink Panther movies.
Let’s see, here we have two non-actors who have somehow managed to a good portion of the movie going public into semi-believing that they are actors, simply by virtue of having been nominated/having won more MTV Movie Awards then any other person.
The fact that the MTV Movie Awards started out as an utter and complete joke and have remained that way seems to have been lost.
And don’t blather to me about Carrey’s having won a Golden Globe.
Big whoop.
It wasn’t so long ago that the Golden Globes were seen as nothing more then a joke, especially after Pia Zadora won a Golden Globe in the early 1980’s. That shows how much legitimacy the Globes have.
Ah well, my only hope is that Sandlers/Carreys asking price will be too high.
And no, neither of them could pull it off. Carrey only knows one kind of comedy and that is broad, and as for Sandler, two words: Little Nicky. Being Clouseau requires quite the delicate comic touch, which neither of these bozos have.
Ugh! Bozos is right. I can’t stand either of these guys and they would only serve to completely ruin any Pink Panther movie they so much as set foot near. I shudder to think.
My nomination for a much better replacement for Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau than either of those two idiots is Rowan Atkinson. I think he could pull it off beautifully and I’d love to see him in that role.
I slightly disagree. I love Carrey. His version of comedy was anything but “broad” in Man in the Moon, and irrelevant in The Truman Show and The Majestic. However, I think he’s a terrible pick for Clouseau.
I also like Sandler in that, man I’m hungover what am I going to watch, sort of way. He also would be a terrible pick.
Atkinson could do the job brilliantly. I’d like to see either a no-name do it, or a complete blackhorse like Gary Sinise give it a shot.
All of these guys would be wise to give the role a pass. At best, you’ll only get credit for rehashing someone else’s routine (see: Man in the Moon). At worst, you’ll be blamed for defiling Peter Seller’s memory. It isn’t worth it when you’re already a star in your own right, as the three guys mentioned here are.
By the way, this is the first time I’ve ever heard Inspector Clouseau’s humor referred to as “delicate.”
Actually, Atkinson’s current film, Johnny English, is extremely Clouseau-like, in that it features a bumbling idiot who’s so much of an idtio that when he pretends not to be an idiot, he only throws his idiocy into sharp relief!
Incidentally, it’s a lousy movie, with every joke telegraphed minutes in advance. I wish Atkinson had done more Blackadder (intelligent sarcasm) than Bean (broad physical comedy).
How badly do we need to see anyone new playing Clouseau, anyway?
First off, why would anyone think Pink Panther needed to be remade?
I agree neither of those two would be an even remotely appropriate choice. I’m not a big Jim Carey fan, but I admit that The Mask and The Truman Show were o.k. movies. But no way is he versatile enough to play Clouseau.
And Sandler is just plain a hack. What’s he gonna do, play the role in his stupid “baby-talk” voice? I’m convinced that guy made a deal with the devil. There is no other rational explanation for his being famous.
And while I’m at it, this whole concept of re-doing old movies just for the nostalgia has got to go. You should have some really, really good reason to re-make any movie, like some new perspective on it that just HAS to be shown, before you decide to do it. And then you still shouldn’t do it anyway.
Such a movie would be made for new fans, especially people under 30 or so who’ve never seen the Pink Panther movies. There’s no harm in reprising the Clouseau character for an audience who has little familiarity with the originals.
I’ve been hearing about a potential Pink Panther remake for years… I’m not sure if that’s encouraging or not for those who don’t want to see it made. I hate Sandler and Carrey, but let’s face it: these movies were broad, slapstick comedy for the most part, and that’s what these guys do.
The reason the movies are more than that is Sellers. Otherwise, I think they’d be very average. And that said, let’s stop and remember that there were, I think, four real Pink Panther movies (not counting the ones with Ted Wass and Roberto Benigni, and another one was just outtakes edited together), and they were NOT all good. (That’s coming from a fan). By the end, Sellers hated the franchise and was just trying to save up money to make Being There.
I think this is too bad, but if anything, it’ll probably remind you just how good Peter Sellers really was.
I think we don’t need to state who we hate or who we love to determine who’s the right choice. In my case, I love Carrey, and Sandler doesn’t make me laugh. But in either case, both are not qualified to play Closeau.
Carrey is versatile enough, but as Nicholson or DeNiro are versatile in their own way. We cannot put DeNiro to play Truman or Nicholson to play Stanley Ipkiss, right? So, there’s no need to insult anyone just because you don’t like him.
