Dear Mods: A true American Heros Death is neither Mundane or Pointless

I recently posted this to IMHO
here

Lt. Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Jr was a true American hero and was the first black General. I learned about his story from a movie. The movie moved me to learn more about the man. He proved himself to be an honorable man and at the same time fought for what he believed was right.

I was truely sad when I heard that he died. I felt that while Ted Williams, whom I also respect, was getting all the headlines General Davis was being ignored. General Davis did more for the US than hit home runs and fly part time. General Davis was a major factor when it came to intergrating the military.

I put my OP in IMHO because the OP didn’t seem to fit with GQ, GD, CS, MPSIMS or the BBQ Pitt.

After posting my OP I found that it was moved to MPSIMS.

Please explain why his death is either ‘Mundane’ or ‘Pointless’ stuff I must share.

I am not trying to flame anyone. I am just curious about why an OP about this American Heros death gets sent to MPSIMS.

Because you didn’t invite anyone’s humble opinion, I reckon.

I know you will not like to hear this, but this question is likely an ATMB one. I agree, this is neither mundane or pointless. I am especially appalled that the mod did not even give a courtesy reply. He just silently moved it. Sure it is in their power, but ethics demands accountability.

Because MPSIMS is basically, um…leftovers. General Gab, in a way.

It’s not specific, it doesn’t have a function.

That’s all.

Think of it as General Conversations.

It’s none of those things (GQ, GD, CS, MPSIMS, or BBQ). But, it is least unlike MPSIMS, if that makes any sense. IMHO of course.

I moved it because you did not ask others opinions on the subject, nor did you start a poll. General statements such as the one you made, no matter how noble or worthy, generally belong in MPSIMS.

I think you’re being oversensitive about this. Placing a thread about a person in a forum for Mundane and Pointless chatter isn’t commentary on the person or his achievements. People have posted threads to MPSIMS about their SOs, children, parents, and grandparents, and none of them ever felt they were in any way degrading those people by placing their tributes in MPSIMS.

I realize he was important to you, and his death has saddened you. I also agree with you that death announcements of noncelebrities have no clearly appropriate forum. However, no disprespect was intended.

You also don’t have to detract from Ted Williams’ accomplishments in order to celebrate Davis, Jr.'s.

It is the most social of our forums. People interact there on more of a personal level…there is nothing mindless or pointless about someone asking for prayer or positive thoughts for a sick loved one, or needing comfort when they lose a beloved pet. Or just sharing their pain for ANY reason.

And a eulogy fits in quite nicely with that concept, IMHO.

I like what Guin said…but I would add to Conversation the concepts of Comfort and Sharing.

Czarcasm,

I still think you are wrong. I’ll drop it because it isn’t worth bickering about.

Apparently the fact that some other people may want to comment on how this American Hero affected their lives doesn’t mean much too you.

I don’t see an issue here.

You did not ask for other opinions on the subject-you gave a rather heartfelt comment on the subject. BTW, others are not being prevented from commenting on the subject in the forum it now resides in, and I think I resent your implying that IMHO is more important than MPSIMS-it merely performs a different function.

So…the Mods should create another board entitled “Noble and Impressive Stuff I Must Share”?

The folders are functional, no matter what their denotations are.

Not all Great Debates are “great,” but they go in that thread.

Not all Cafe Society discussions take place in a cafe, but there they go.

Not all BBQ Pit rants discuss barbecues, but that’s where they’re found.

Remember:
Denotation = the strict dictionary definition
Connotation = the definitons a word commonly bring to mind.

Context, man. Context.

MPSIMS is also where we have threads commemorating the liberation of the Dutch during Word War II, people celebrating the birth of the United States, people thanking those who serve in our armed forces, to mention a few during the past few months. The thread started during the attacks on September 11th are in MPSIMS. It has the best of us, as well as the most trivial. I’d say General Davis is in good company.

William Kat died? Gosh, that’s too bad.

sleestak - it’s just a problem with the way that the Forums are organized mainly by function and not by topic. Czarcasm is describing it exactly right. If the Board was divided into topical areas, then there may be a more “appropriate sounding” place for the thread.

But the flip side of topical Forums is that people don’t know what to do in them. My Board is organized by topics, roughly. But people are sometimes hesitant to start a “great debate” in one of them, because the Forum does not say it is specifically for “debating”.

If it’s any consolation, I’ve wanted to post a few “general information sharing” threads, and not felt that they were very mundane or pointless in nature. Nonetheless, MPSIMS is the proper place for them.

Just don’t move my Rod Steiger Appreciation Thread, snookums.

sleestak, on 9/11, the primary terrorist attack thread went in MPSIMS. That forum seems to be the place for general communication…certainly 9/11 wasn’t mundane or pointless. Neither is this hero’s death.

Maybe the name of the forum should just be SIMS…cept that would be weird and wrong, so no ;).

Also, when WallyM7, one of our most prolific and popular posters at the time, died, that was also announced in MPSIMS. If you read the forum regularly, you can see that the topics discussed range far beyond the mundane and pointless.

Also, check out Coldfire’s thread “May 5, 1945 - we shall remember”, which is currently on the first page of MPSIMS. It’s an incredible tribute to fallen veterans in a foreign land, was written by a native of that land, who happens to be a moderator, in MPSIMS.

You need to separate the “Mundane, Pointless” and “Things I Must Share” into two different entities, sleestak. Just because something must be shared, doesn’t make it mundane or pointless. However, all of the above belong in MPSIMS.

Thanks for telling us about the death of General Davis; he was truly the kind of man this country wouldn’t exist without.

Maybe the forum should just be called “General Conversation”.
