Dear waiter I stiffed the other night:

Unless, ya know, another Doper lives in the area and wants the problem staff dealt with before dining there.

I did say earlier that I was writing an email, I just wanted my friends to read it too. If I’d have wanted a Pittsburgh Doper (which I don’t think Will Repair is) to write it for me I would have asked them.

Huh. So in the greater metropolitan Pittsburgh area, the yellow pages have a listing for mothers-in-law. Interesting.

I might have to visit Pittsburgh one day, just to see that.

You have good points, but I still think that once you disclosed the name of the establishment, it became a community problem for everyone in the area, especially since the place seems to have an otherwise sterling reputation.

I also think that you were a little too passive-aggressive the other night. Come on – leaving a Canadian penny and writing a note?

You asked to speak to the manager twice, and were refused. That’s unacceptable on their part. I know that if I were in your situation, I would have by-god gotten to talk to him, in person or on the phone, before I left the building. Who knows whether you’d have sent the email or not.

Fair enough, I can see that distinction. I think it gets a bit ropey since the OP posted the name for all to see, but I see the point and I do think Will Repair was being a bit of a dick by e-mailing the thread. I was worried that you were complaining about people linking to the company, but you’ve cleared that up.

To davenportavenger, I know you’re pissed about the thread getting e-mailed to 'em and I would be too now I’ve thought about the reasons you just posted. In particular the hyperbole about the restaurant closing but will they even be able to identify you (either you yourself or even just which group you were?). Secondly you come across as reasonable in the thread, they’ll work out from how the pit works if they poke around a bit. There’s a fair chance that Will Repair never sent that mail and was just stirring … oh, actually scratch that I can say trolling now … trolling. Finally there’s a fair chance the restaurant manager will ignore the e-mail or it’ll got spam trapped anyway.

I doubt that he was either trolling or being a dick, he was probably trying to help the situation, but just didn’t think it through first. Like none of the rest of us have ever done that.

Likewise, he’s not the one who set up the potential for an email campaign againt the restaurant. DA did that when she not only gave the name, but also expressed the hope that their business would suffer.

That’s my take on it, too - I ask to see a manager, and you refuse to bring him? Okay, I’ll hunt him down myself then. You have just given me a mission. I’m like that, though.

It would have been within an hour of the posting time. So, no.

By the way, Daniel Pielorinho, why do you ask?

From this message, I can only assume you think you’ve figured out Left Hand of Dorkness’ real name and are posting it here to get a rise out of him. Posting a user’s real-life information is a huge no-no. Second warning. If you don’t knock off the trolling internet detective act right this fucking minute, you’re not going to be around here much longer.

(If Daniel Pielorinho is actually some famous person you’re referring to, feel free to enlighten me and I’ll rescind the warning. From my cursory Google search, I don’t think that’s the case, but I could be wrong.)

Giraffe, I’d respectfully advise that you edit Will Repair’s post (and your quotation) to remove the name that is listed. If that really is LeftHand’s real name, I think his privacy should be respected.

I also want to say that you’ve shown far more restraint in re to Will Repair than I would have.

It’s not my real name, but it is my name on another messageboard, with justification even dorkier than my username here. I’ve probably mentioned there or here my username on the other board, and if I’ve not, I’ve definitely mentioned here that I’m a moderator there; it wouldn’t take too much work to figure that out. Only one mod there signs his posts “Daniel.”

That said, Will, I’m not sure why you phrased it like that.

And to answer your question, Will, I wondered whether bigcheese was a manager from that restaurant who registered to rebut the charges. Given his/her later posts, I no longer wonder that.

Daniel

Seconded. And not only that, Giraffe himself repeats the name in his own post.

How do you deduce that?

“Deduce” is a strong word to describe the death of a half-assed speculation :). Big Cheese’s later posts castigated Will for sending the link, and mentioned a hope that something would be done, and mentioned what he guessed the manager would do, based on experiences at his own workplace. That doesn’t sound to me like something the owner of the restaurant in question would write. Sure, I could be wrong, but I’m no longer wondering about it.

Daniel

I only noticed one post by bigcheese after the first one. Not plural.

I also Googled the name “Sharp Edge” and noticed two locations. I’m curious which location was the one we’re dealing with?

Nah, he posted #51 as well.

Aaaaannnddd I see now you said “one post by bigcheese after the first one”, which does in fact equal two.

Off to bed now.

Post, then, not posts.

Daniel

This one AFAICT.
