These operating systems use such outdated architecture. We should have a proper μ-Kernel-multi-server system (or three) in wide use that can update its components without having to reboot. Not even Apple, who deploy that type of system, has figured out how to update without a restart. I swear, we are working with stone knives and bearskins.
The thing is, with Windows 10, the idea is that there will be constant updates. If they don’t fix this stupid issue, it’s going to kill the OS.
A lot of it comes from how updates are handled. The tech to do live updates has existed forever. Just redesign Windows around that concept and stop requiring restarts.
From what I understand, that’s not a “just” issue, it would mean redesigning the whole OS from the ground up, and probably breaking a great deal of backwards compatibility, unless emulators for previous versions were also included. It’s not impossible, but I doubt it would be profitable for Microsoft to do it, so they won’t.
This. I’m glad it’s something that can be fixed, but god damn the fact that it happens at all - the fact that your computer tells you “you have 15 minutes and then we have to restart and it will take fucking forever and there’s nothing you can do about it” - means someone screwed the pooch.
Maybe it’s been fixed, I’ve had problems with that screen because every key results in a restart. If you’re typing when it pops up, you see a screen for a split second and then things start closing.
