Death at a Funeral (2010)

Really? Are we that bereft of new ideas that we need to remake - excuse me, reimagine - Death at a Funeral (2007)?

(Pardon me if this post turns out to be a reimagining of someone else’s - I did try to search for it.)

The difference appears to be that instead of a farce featuring British actors, it’s one featuring African-American actors.

They are also remaking “The bodyguard” (too lazy to find the link). Surely this must be a sign.
Tomorrow, for the first time in 15 years, I’ll confess my sins, you never know.

They also remade State of Play, coming out this year. The original dates from 2003.

I’m pretty well tuned in to pop culture and I watch a lot of movies. I barely remember Death at a Funeral coming out. I maybe saw one or two commercials for it. The only thing I thought when I saw the commercial was “Hey its the guy from MI5.” If done well with a good cast it may reach a wide American audience which the first one did not. It only did $8.5 million in the US. I think there is plenty of audience out there for a new movie.

ETA: Looking at the IMDB page for the new one I would say there are some major differences. The new one will be a Chris Rock written comedy with a mostly black cast. (most of the cast is labeled as “rumored”) Rock did the same thing with *Heaven Can Wait/Here Comes Mr Jordan *with bad results.

I thought the original definitely had its moments but I’m hoping the remake (not that I plan to see it) will cut the shit- literally (if you’ve seen it you know the scene and if you haven’t it’s a spoiler). I don’t see the need for a remake though and while I like Chris Rock as a comic he simply doesn’t make good movies (major scenery chewer).
Next up: Tyler Perry’s THE READER- Madea’s seduction of a teenager (Chris Brown) causes some stuff to happen, and there’s a Christian moral to it in the end.

I can’t get too bent out of shape about a remake of Death at a Funeral. It was mildly amusing but nothing to write about so there’s actually a chance to improve upon it.

My ire is reserved for the Steven Spielberg and Will Smith’s remake of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy. Spielberg has some apologizing to do after Indy 4 and ruining a perfectly good movie by sanding off all of the edges isn’t really the way to do it. Sorry for the hijack.
