"Death Race is my favourite Super Mario movie"

When I was at the shops yesterday, I found a set of Death Race and Death Race 2 for $9. Since this was:

  • a Jason Statham movie
  • called Death Race
  • which I’d heard mentioned before

I picked it up. Has anyone else watched this?

I’d say my biggest complaint is that there were too many deaths. I know what you’re thinking, but I thought there should have been more competitors who lost the race without either dying instantly or being ganked by someone else. The first movie stresses the importance of star power to the whole concept, but chewing through all your potential up-and-coming racers means a bad turn will leave you with nothing but redshirts. Apart from that, the first movie was great, especially the Dreadnaught.

The second is a prequel. The protagonist here is a stronger character despite not being Jason Statham, but the end was rather disappointing.

My biggest complaint was that it removed the best part of the original, which was that anybody in the entire country was fair game to be run over for points.

I don’t think there was enough variety in the racing. Seemed kind of limited in scope.

I watched the last half of it a few weeks ago. It had some nice explosions, but the plot didn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense, as you note.

The best part of the original was the pre-silicone nudity :stuck_out_tongue:

What does this have to do with Super Mario?

I didn’t get the comment either, until I watched it.

The cars’ weapons are disabled at the start of the race to stop everyone just blasting the front guy two seconds in. The weapons are only armed by driving over pressure plates, making it a bit like a violent Super Mario Kart movie.

Death Race 2000 is by far superior. At the very least, it lacks the pointlessly relentless split-second editing and determined gimmickery that make the more recent films just… silly.
