Debunk (or not?) this pro-Bernie post about Nevada

Bernie looks more and more like a foolish, angry old man. Now he’s pissing off the Democratic party at a time when he’s trying to convince the supers to switch sides?

FWIW, Hillary needs 89 more delegates. Bernie over 800. This is why his supporters are so angry.

I’ve now seen more info on this.

Of the 58 or 64 delegates (both numbers have been given) that were disqualified by the rules because they weren’t registered Democrats, it turns out that only 8 of them were actually present for the Convention. (And 6 of them got seated.)

The first rule of party organizing is to make sure your supporters show up! And especially with new people (like these), that may take a lot of personal phone calls, offering rides, etc.

Having been a Democratic Party Officer for over 30 years, this sounds pretty similar to what one hears quite often from campaigns with mostly new, inexperienced people when they lose. It’s much easier to claim the rules were biased against you than to admit that you just didn’t have the votes.

Generally, the candidate knows a bit more, and is able to support their party’s nominee in the general election over the opponent. Sometimes it takes a while to recover from the hurt of being defeated, but eventually they are able to dispassionately see how much closer their nominee represents their views than the other party’s.

Hold it, even if it is true that parking was the reason that they were late, how is that not their fault? (I’m saying this as a person who is always late for almost everything). There was no sudden change of either venue or meeting time. All of those people had weeks to figure out how to drive to the location and park in time to make it to the convention. They could have planned better.

Also, that convention site was on the Strip. There’s plenty of parking. Tons. There are places in the world where parking is difficult to find - this is not one of them. That’s not a reasonable excuse.

Yeah, that’s a weak excuse. I’m often late for things, like parties or movies or dinner or even work where it doesn’t matter if I’m slightly late. But for very important things or things where I can’t be even a minute late, like job interviews or theater performances I’m very early, so that even if something comes up and I’m running late I’ll still be there in time. Unless there’s some missing information, like the venue changed or there was sudden massive construction around the venue that closed off all entrances but one, there’s no one to blame for them being late other than the delegates and Sanders campaign for not organizing better and reminding people or giving them rides.

Oh come on. Lots of Clinton supporters are insufferable snots who are plenty capable of being nasty but don’t have much reason to indulge. It’s not that Clinton has a better class of voter; it’s that Clinton’s current standing leads to less desperation.

I think that’s the issue. That desperation is leading to anger which Bernie’s babies are not yet capable of channeling into productive means. Somehow throwing chairs and making death threats against local leaders is newsworthy and they enjoy adding non-stop media attention to their “Johnny-come-lately Democrat” candidate.

I think we would likely see some Clintots throwing tantrums were it the other way around. We’re turning into that sort of country.

The difference is that we’d have Clinton explicitly trying to tamp it down, as she had long before this point in '08.

This isn’t 2008. In 2008, the Republican nominee scolded a woman at a rally for calling Obama a Muslim. In 2016, that woman would get a speaking role at the convention.

Much of the internet is a hyperpartisan grievance factory, where likeminded people hang out, get all of their ideology validated and are encouraged in their over the top rhetoric. It hit the Republican party first but it has now hit the Democratic party too.

I don’t think it matters much in the long run, but many Clinton supporters were the 2008 version of hateful in 2008. They would be the 2016 version of hateful in 2016 given the right circumstances.

I’m dubious of this claimed symmetry. Remember, Bernie’s supporters skew young, while Hillary’s skew old. The people rioting at the Democratic convention in '68 were young. So were the protesters at the anti-WTO “Battle of Seattle” in the late '90s. Can you cite examples of people from the demographic groups that make up the majority of Hillary’s support getting similarly riled up?

There were PUMAs in 2008, but they were not remotely as disruptive, mendacious, and selfishly embittered as present “Bernie or Bust” types, and in the end they were few, as well as totally inconsequential. Also, Clinton didn’t go out of her way to rile them up, unlike Bernie now.

You’re going to find malcontents and wackos in all the camps this cycle. The real difference is how the leader of that camp responds to those who act inappropriate. As far as I’m concerned, Bernie has failed to lead his tribe, instead he claims this is caused by a Democratic party that is unfair and biased against him. That’s tantamount to supporting it. Offering an occasional “death threats are inappropriate” message to placate the opposition is his way of appearing peaceful.

I strongly suspect Hillary would stand up and call it what it is, lawlessness and chaos and totally unwelcome.

It looks like maybe he has been tamed by the carrots and sticks of his “fellow” Democrats in the Senate:

Let’s hope!

Encouraging news!

Yeah I’m not holding my breath. All the logic in the world isn’t going to hold pissed-off people from giving in to their aggression and animus because they’re unhappy that they didn’t get their candy NOW. Nor do I think Bernie is going to do anything but pay lip service to tranquility while he gooses his followers with the other hand.

It hit progressives, but did it hit the democratic party? Is Bernie Sanders really a democrat? I think a lot of Bernie Sanders voters - the majority - are democrats who have been impressed with his rhetoric and ideas, which is fair enough. But the Bernie or Bust types…who are they exactly? They care about their definition of what a progressive is, but they don’t care about the democratic party, which is not to say that the democratic party is some sort of cathedral of all that is good in the world. It is, however, the main vehicle for advancing progressive values, which is presumably why he chose to run as a democrat even though he hasn’t actually been one. And now we’re approaching the great infomercial that we call the convention and Bernie’s actions lately indicate that, at minimum, he has no reverence for this cathedral, and it’s quite possible he might throw bottles and rocks through its windows and try to set it afire if he doesn’t get his way.

Time will tell. Actions will tell.
