Deckchick's Critters 2009

As some of you know, I have a small farm. I raise chickens, turkeys, pigs and goats. I also have 3 dogs, 2 Australian Shepherds and a Meremma Sheepdog. Plus the requisite cats, 5 in the barn and 1 in the house.

I have 7 female goats and Toby the Studly Billy. Toby had one hell of a party in the barn last fall, because last week 6 of the 7 girls had their babies one after another. I now have 11 baby goats running around.

Last night while I was doing whatever the heck it is that a do in the barn, this occurred.

Sasha and her Babies

Awwww, those baby goats are so cute. And Sasha is so patient. Mostly.

SQUUUUEEEEEEE!

You need to have a permanent camera on this! It will satisfy my major urge to being a genteel farmer or being a James Herriott type. It’s too much work.

How is sascha with chickens?

Those are some seriously cute baby goats. Will you be keeping them all, or selling them, or what?

I’ve bookmarked your channel, btw - dang, those aminals are so cute! But what was Sascha biting at on her tail? She looked like she had a mouth full of fur. Just wanted to make sure she was okay! LOL

And did the baby goats all make out okay? The nursery was so cool … er, warm for the goats, though.

How long before they’re ready for slaughter? Kid goat stew… yum! And the leather makes excellent gloves.

Lemme guess, those aren’t mountain goats, are they?

Oh yeah, and Sasha doesn’t seem real… um, motivated.

“I just can’t quite muster the energy to crush you between my jaws. But be warned!”

Garsh that’s sweet!

FarmerChick, as you know, Auntie Cold and her baby goats are already a hit in our house (my daughter insists on watching the YouTube videos over and over and over). This will doubtless be a new “must see” for HRH!

<sigh> They’re not being very respectful of their elders, are they?
Kids these days…

What a great dog! So tolerant! And the kids are so cute!

May I ask what song is playing? And who it’s by?

GT and Shirley, Sasha is awesome with all the critters. She only jumped because the little guy tried to nurse!

Sasha will do most anything for her critters, but she does draw a line somewhere!

Twister & Quartz the girls I keep for milking, the boys are destined for slaughter (Sorry! but I do have to pay for their feed somehow ) They go to the great playground in the sky in late fall. And goat stew really is awesome. Do you put barley in it? Most excellent on a winter day…

Tarragon It was a rough start for the first few days if you watched the previous few videos, but so far they all are OK. The first set that were born in -42 will probably lose at least part of their ears, and the one kid still has trouble with the hind leg that was frozen. But considering that they probably should be dead, I’m happy with their progress! The rest are doing great, there is 11 with one still due.

Sasha is a furry beast and she’s starting to shed. I actually shave her and my 2 Australian Shepherds in May, they love it!

Boyo Jim Sasha is a Meremma Sheepdog, they are awesome guardians, she doesn’t chase anything, cats, chickens, nothing… BUT do NOT come between her and her goats, it won’t be pretty and she is very motivated. She really is a serious dog when she needs to be. I have a coulée and major marshland just down the ridge, there are a ton of coyotes all around here, I haven’t lost a chicken or a cat as long as they stay overnight in the barn. In fact, I have never trained her at all, it’s all instinct, she decides what she wants to do, and she’s a very smart dog.

Dotty I’m glad your daughter enjoys “Auntie Cold’s” videos! I am just way too busy to even try to keep up in the MMP, so I figured I will just post to his thread as a get a good video or two…
Hunter kids are kids everywhere :smack:

Canadiangirl The song is by the fabulous Ray Lamontagne. I LOVE him.

Thanks for the update, FarmerChick! I am especially glad to hear that -all- the kids are doing as well as they can be expected to do - I must admit I was worried about the ones who had the frozen ears. Aww! And thanks for explaining about the fur/hair of your sheepdog; it does look quite thick right now. LOL

Thanks again for sharing with us - so great to see the farm.

I enjoyed that. Thanks!
