All PMs are out. Please verify that you received your message in this thread. Also, feel free to discuss any rules, strategies, or ideas. Night 0 officially started when Mahaloth declared it earlier!
This is going to be a rare, no color explanation of the leveling mechanic before we get started. For town, there are two ways to earn experience. Using your powers will grant you 50% of a level. Lynching scum will grant you a whole level. There is a 100% cap on experience per day/night cycle, which means successfully lynching scum will cap you for that day and night.
How do the Lords of Slaughter gain experience? Maybe if you ask them nicely, they’ll tell you.
Your new or improved abilities come at levels 3 and 5. For this campaign, level 5 is considered max level.
One final note: just for completeness, the modified sample PM:
Class: NPC Townsperson
Alignment: Defenders of De’endee
Role: NPC
Powers: None
Wincondition: You win when all threats to the Defenders of De’endee are vanquished and at least one member of the Defenders of De’endee is still alive.
Have fun!
Nah, I’m a gnome rogue. I like it, because for some reason it pisses people off
Oh, and I have sharpened my pencil, polished my dice, and received my PM. I’ll be at the tavern waiting for everyone. Look for the short guy with the large tankard.
Do you think the leveling mechanic may cause a massive pile-up of power roles on the vote leader toward the end of the day (even if not strongly believed in) just on the off-chance they’re scum? Do you think it should? If so, should vanillas do the same?
I don’t have a lot of time at this second, but I did want to comment on what stood out most to me in the ruleset: the double vote plus tie-resolution mechanism could be a useful tool for us. If (and this is a big if) we can force a tie of the two most suspicious players, we can get two lynches per day. Two lynches for each Scum kill = advantage Town.
The problem, of course, is getting a consensus on candidates and herding enough cats to arrange the tie. My experience tells me that this will be extremely challenging. But IMO it is worth a try. Anyone see a downside to the idea?
The biggest downside I see is that quite often the most suspicious players turn out to be Town. Burning through Townies at a 2-per-Day clip will end this game real fast.
As the game progresses we might well find ourselves in a situation where this is a useful strategy, but I think we need to be pretty sure of ourselves before trying to make it work. And as you noted, it might be impossible to actually put such a plan into play.
