Deer Damage

Got sideswiped by a deer. Really did an amazing amount of damage. Took off the drivers side mirror and the surrounding plastic cowling. It looks like both things should more or less snap back in place. One person was adamant that glue be used (like gorilla glue). I want to put things back the way they were, but i really don’t think the adhesive is necessary. Is it? What do I align to get the mirror back on?

I managed to remove the passenger side mirror on my car. Now, I cracked the stem holding the mirror, so I really didn’t have a choice other than replacing it. I found an online store selling the entire mirror package for about $35. We went inside the car, popped off the inside piece of plastic that covers where the mirror mounts, and that opened up access to a set of screws. Take out the screws, disconnect the cables that run the electric mirror adjustments, and the whole outer mirror and housing just slides out. Slide in the new one, connect the wires, screw in the screws and pop the inside plastic cover back in place.

If your pieces are just knocked out of place, you should be able to disassemble and reassemble back into the original shape. If your deer broke off tabs that hold the bits in place, you may have to replace. Google “replace driver mirror” and the make of your car, and I bet you can find all kinds of instructions on how to do it.

Easily done, 20 minute and $35.

Gotta know what kind of car you got…

I cannot believe I did not mention it. It is a 2003 Pontiac Vibe.

Just be grateful that you didn’t hit a moose.

I did this on a 2000 Grand Am. I had used epoxy cement, but it had begun to vibrate loose over time.

Do not use Gorilla glue for automotive trim repair. Gorilla Glue expands as it dries and will expand to the exterior of the seam you are gluing. The stuff is damn near impossible to remove once it dries. Don’t ask how I know this, that was a bad day.
