Shop around. Mine was $150, and it came with 1000 rounds (corrosive, so 5 minutes shooting=1/2 hour cleaning). It’s a fun plinking gun. Cheap to shoot, accurate to a degree, and gives a satisfying WHOOMP. I recommend bowling pins for targets. You’d be amazed at how many rounds those things can take.

So, “a few years back” is actually 16 years ago. You have to go this far back to find a civilian death from hunting. The rare cases where there is a fatal hunting accident are almost always hunters. It’s extremely rare to have non hunters be killed during hunting season.

I can’t find stats for MA online, but here is an article which talks about New Hampshire hunting safety: From the Union Leader

Insurance companies like to quantify things in rates per 100,000. When you do that, New Hampshire’s hunting accident rates comes out to 2.98 per 100,000. This an astoundingly low rate compared with just about any other sport or pursuit.

For instance, the National Safety Council put the 2001 football accident rate at 2,369 per 100,000, compared with six per 100,000 for hunters nationally. Swimming had a rate of 319, golf 173, soccer 1,262, and basketball 2,326. Even climbing and hiking have accident rates far out-stripping hunting.

To state that “Every season there are a few deaths” from hunting in MA is simply bullshit. The onus is on ralphp to prove his claim, which he will be unable to do.

I’ve also been hunting my whole life and never seen a painted cow. Good luck proving that absurd claim.

We’ll have to wait for more facts. Not that I find his story too credible, but details are still too lacking for anyone to be rendering final judgement.

There are also sip and puff rifles which allows someone to fire with their mouth, much like driving a power chair with a sip and puff (essentially certain predetermined things happened based on a series of sips and puffs.) There are also deer stands which are essentially “cherry pickers” so climbing is not required.

I have no particular pro or con feeling on what happened but another account I read said that there was only one gun among the group. I don’t know why that many people would go deer hunting with only one gun, but it would explain why Vang was able to shoot so many other people without being shot himself.

I heard on NPR about a guy who has set up guns that can be fired remotely. It’s aimed with a CCTV camera and fired by the click of a mouse. IIRC, there is a safety guy at the gun installation to ensure that the button jocky doesn’t shoot at anything he’s not supposed to shoot at.

Actually according to the cops,  only one of the others was armed. Even if you belive this psycho's own account, he claims they shot first, but after the guy with the gun went down, he was bound and determined to kill every other person arround. He chased one unarmed fleeing man down so he could shoot him in the back, and when others (also unarmed) arived on an atv he shot them. He also saw another, who he had already shot, stand up (this is still from HIS OWN account), screamed "aren't you dead yet", and shot at him again.

  The only place we would want this guy in Afganistan is on the other side.  We claim to be fighting the bad guys over there this guy has proved he is one of those.

According to Snopes, it’s an urban legend/staged event:

The “painted cows” story has made it past fact checkers and into the news on a few occasions. In 1985 Michigan farmer Tom Guthrie became a media celebrity after a photograph showing one of his heifers with the word ‘COW’ spray-painted in orange on its side was ingested without the requisite grain of salt, and the photo was taken by the Detroit News and run under the headline “Truth in Packaging.” From there the picture was picked up by the wire services, leading many readers to believe the labeling of cows to deter hunters was on the up-and-up. Yet the photo had been staged, as Guthrie freely admitted. He was not experiencing problems with errant hunters, nor had any of his livestock been harmed — he’d merely been obliging someone who’d asked for a favor.

I’ve also seen references to supposed painting “horse” on a horse, and “not a deer” on a cow. But you know, you can use a larger font just painting “cow”.

From what I’ve read so far, the man supposedly had no ammunition (haven’t read up on it since this morning, so… on that), but I bet if he did have ammo, he probably would’ve unloaded on the officers. What would stop him? He’s already nuts…

He took the remaining ammo he had and threw it in the swamp/field as he was walking out, he said “I’d done enough killing”. He had no ammo because of that.
