OK, I get it, if you watched all the prequel shows this episode ties up some lose ends or something. But that was just a mess of a first episode for a series. The writers did such a bad job. They needed to start bringing together the main heroes about 20-30 minutes into the show, not, not at all.
Seriously, what rubbish this is. It better get better fast or I’m gone and I doubt they’ll bring in any new viewers.
I thought it was fine. The significance of a “pilot” episode doesn’t seem as important when they drop the whole season on you in one go. The slower burn of bringing the group together over the first few episodes worked for me.
Spoilers about how long it takes everyone to team up:
Second episode has the four heroes pair off (Luke + Danny and Matt + Jessica). Third episode ends with a massive fight scene between all four Defenders and a ninja boardroom.
I’ve not watched it either, but I do have to point out some parallels to the original Defenders series… they insisted they were not a team for at least the first couple of years, though toward the end I like to think it was just a flippant way to respond to Namor declaring yet again that he was quitting the non-team.
On the other hand, the lineup includes none of the originals or even the first few to be added. I can see why they’d have trouble getting the rights to Doctor Strange, the Hulk, or Namor.
I’m into episode 5. I’d grant that the first episode takes a bit to get its traction going, dealing with and cutting between four characters’ storylines and all. Not helped by the fact that I had skipped Iron Fist so was missing one group’s backstories. And a viewer coming in without having watched the other shows would probably give up on it pretty quickly.
“Bad” is an overstatement. “Great” though it warn’t. So far I’m putting the season on par with Luke Cage and below Jessica Jones or either Daredevil season. But five eps in they are getting more into some moving the plot, even if they are telegraphing some things a bit heavily.
The cinematography is annoying as all get out, and Iron Fist’s acting is atrocious, but otherwise I like it so far. I’m only up to episode 2, though. One per day is my normal binge method.
Watched it. Some good parts, some meh parts. I don’t judge shows based on the first episode because those are usually not representative of the whole. But we’re way past pilots by now, just first episodes.
The individual stories at the beginning make more sense if you’ve already watched the individual shows. By the time all four of them get together, you know their common thread. The writers do take their sweet time getting them to that point, though, which is maddening while you’re watching it but it makes sense later.
I don’t want to post spoilers since it just came out yesterday (8/18), but once it’s been around for a bit I’ll be happy to. Overall, I liked it. I think they pay too much attention to my least favorite, though.
The supporting cast is stronger in places than the main cast. I’ve found that to be true, though, in most Marvel shows.
That’s hardly surprising, considering that, aside from Krysten Ritter, most of the supporting casts are more experienced and accomplished actors than the leads.
The pilot did not strike me as specially bad, probably because i watched the whole thing in a couple days so it seems more like a complete package than individual episodes. I enjoyed the show, not as good as the best Marvel shows but not as bad as Iron Fist.
For what it is worth, a first show should be trying to sell the series to a new audience, thus a pilot.
If you did not follow the prior 4 shows and are not into the comic book versions, I think this show’s 1st episode failed at making a favorable impression on new viewers. If you tell me it was not a pilot and not trying to draw in new fans, then fine.
Well this is Netlflix, you don’t need to wait around for someone to show the other four shows again to “catch up”. There are sure to be some people who go into Defenders without bothering to watch the other four shows, which are RIGHT there and just as available as Defenders, but it can’t be a significant number. They don’t have to treat things like they were on regular TV.
If they insisted on giving significant time to all four characters in the pilot, then they ought to have really super-sized it. I’m talking, you know, an hour at the minimum, and hopefully more. If they didn’t want to super-size the pilot, they should have chosen certain characters who are not Iron Fist and expanded their stories, while burying Iron Fist in the background. Ultimately, the pilot did an acceptable job of table-setting, but it wasn’t exceptional. I’d also like to say that this opening credits sequence was much less interesting than any of the other shows in the group.
