Define "Best Practices"

I’ve seen the like-named website. I like to hear your interpretations. Thanks!

Where I work (basically doing a combo of accounting and SysAdmin work), best practices basically mean the best way to do something. It is usually a combo of efficiency, cost-effectiveness, reliability, user friendliness, time, etc.

You can keep your Wally sig, because SwimmingRiddles designated me as St. Mullinator: Patron Saint of Republicans That SwimmingRiddles Respects!

I have worked mainly in the insurance industry. BEst practices refers to a set of rule or guidelines that outline the procedure for doing things. They are generally not exhaustive, but rather set some standards that must be met in a given process.

For example, a claim examiner may be required to contact the insured and the claimant withing 24 hours of the receipt of the claim, document all contacts is a particular manner, obtain statements, finish financial data within 10 days, revisit and document the assessment of the financial data within 60 days, etc.

Best practices offer a template against which work is reviewed by managent. Each file is reviewed, graded on its compliance with the template and then scored. This score generally figures into an employee’s bonus or raise.

I agree that the definition is either exactly as implied or specific to the task. I think it has become the new buzzword, as it appears on several resumes I’ve reviewed.
Tantamount to saying I work efficiently. Thanks for the feedback.
