Definition of "ETA"

Since the advent of the ability to edit posts, I’ve run across numerous threads where someone who has edited their own post has written “ETA:” prior to contributing addition information to what they’ve already said. While I get the gist of the ETA notification (I think!), I don’t know what this actually stands for. I’d appreciate some help.

The quickest example I could come up with can be found here.

I’ve always taken it to mean “Edited To Add…”

eta: nm

I asked and got some answers here.

I reckon that makes more sense than “estimated time of arrival”…

Should I add this to the Glossary? I take it this is “standard message board usage” and not exclusive to the Straight Dope?

I know I’ve seen it someplace else pre-SDMB editing, but I can’t remember where – probably blogs.

Correct – “ETA” is used far and wide on the Internet.

Well, if it is standard message board usage, maybe you could slip it into that list at the top of common abbreviations that you say you aren’t going to define but define anyway.

OK, done. Thanks.

I always thought it was Estimated Time of Arrival, but now it seems to be pretty standard corporatespeak for “the time you think you’ll have that done by”.

I’ve noticed that too. I assumed it meant ‘when will it arrive on my desk’.
