I just decided to delete my thread subscriptions from the various Duck Dynasty discussions because I just can’t be bothered anymore. I’ve said my piece and saying it again isn’t going to help.
Other times, I delete subscriptions because my comment was a throwaway one-liner, or because the thread wasn’t all that interesting as it developed.
But this is the first time I think I deleted a subscription because I found myself getting too involved with the discussion.
How about you? Do you bother to modify your subscribed threads list, and if so, why?
When I first login, I click on “quick links”, then “subscribed threads” to see in vain hope whether my comments were referenced, or at least alluded to. Makes it easy to track the discussions I’m involved in.
I’m set to automatically subscribe to all threads I post in with “no email notification”. You can set it in your control panel. Click on the User CP button at the top and you’ll see all the threads you’ve posted to with new posts.
The only time I un-subscribe from something is, like the OP, when I made some throwaway comment in a thread I just don’t care about anymore, but more then that, it’s when the thread really takes off after that. If it suddenly gets hundreds of posts and is popping up everytime I hit the button, I’ll probably opt out of it.
I only subscribe to threads I want to be able to find quickly later, keeping my “subscribed threads” list at no more than 20 or so. Most of the current ones are season threads for weekly shows – if I watched the show in real time (I know, how retro, right?), I’m often the first to post after a new ep.
I let it automatically subscribe me to threads that I comment in (with emails turned off) and often explicitly subscribe to interesting threads even if I have no comment to make. That’s why having the “last visited” timer reset when it shouldn’t makes me very stabby.
To answer the OP, yes I unsubscribe as well; if a thread has gone way off topic or become too silly (“too silly” depends on the thread topic).
I’m a “99er”. In the 14 on & off years (wow!) I’ve been on these boards I have never subscribed to a thread. I have searched for threads where I posted, but never subscribed.
A lot of us 99er’s started using the subscription service when TPTB implemented Five Minutes Between Searches (before Two Minutes Between Searches). I, like a lot of others, would just do a username search for my own name to check to see if there were new posts that I had posted too, but when they put a time limit between searches that became a problem and they suggested we subscribe to our threads. In the end it worked out better, IMO.
