Sometimes my IT neighbor sends some stuff our way that was too problematic for them to deal with. He just gave us one of these Dell 1700, and he said “It has ink and toner!” with kind of a smirk So sure enough, can’t get drivers. Anybody know a good driver site that is not some kind of honeypot? Or better, where I get XP drivers for this silly thing, it is an old model so they must exist, I do believe!
I promised some flyers to a group I am with and I thought I would print them on this one, but it is kind of bizarre, the thing just can’t find a driver.
And yeah, I googled my ass off already. The driver from the Dell website just runs and does nothing.
I think Dell laser printers are rebranded Lexmark printers. So if you can figure out the Lexmark equivalent, you should be able to get the driver from Lexmark’s website.
Since you have the Dell Driver, did you follow the proper install directions? The drvier download will not automatically install the driver:
Custom Instructions for Dell_1700_1700n_Win2KXP_Drivers_en.exe:
Download the file to a directory on your hard drive. The file downloaded is a self-extracting executable.
Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
After the files have been unpacked, you may delete the self-extracting file downloaded in step 1.
Plug in the printer to the computer.
When the “New Hardware Wizard” comes up, follow the onscreen instructions.
When prompted for the drivers, browse to the directory where the files were extracted (default: C:\Dell\printer\Drivers\Print\Win_2kXP) and click next.
After the “New Hardware Wizard” is complete, reboot the computer.
Note that you do NOT connect the printer to the computer until step 4!
Doing it earlier may cause this not to work correctly. (In which case, disconnect it, delete mention of the printer from Windows hardware, reboot, and start over.)
I learned that the hard way when connecting an HP printer to a Windows XP PC; it really messes things up if you connect the printer before the driver software tells you to do so. I have no idea why it’s that difficult; since most computers are connected to the Internet all the time, I should be able to just connect a printer and have the computer silently download the appropriate driver. (And another annoyance is how bloated HP’s drivers are lately. Many of them are 200-500MB and take a long time to install.)
Read on some board that the Dell printers are rebranded Lexmarks, so I downloaded some Lexmark laser printer driver and now it works fine. Thanks for all the help.
