I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop running Vista. When I first got the laptop everything worked great; however, several months ago it crashed. They fixed it and reinstalled Vista, but now there are some problems and one of them is that the microphone seems to no longer work. I’ll go into Audacity, press Record, and it will start recording (with a flat blue line) but the mic won’t pick up anything. It’s a good mic - I’ve used it for years. In the Sound section of the control panel, it says for recording, “Line In - High Definition Audio Device - Working.” But of course, it’s not working. Also, I’m pretty sure this laptop has an integral microphone, but it doesn’t show up when this mic isn’t plugged in - it just says there’s no recording device.
Something is very wrong here. Does anyone know what to do?
Just tried to install 'SIGMATEL" driver from Dell website. Got 99% of the way through the installation, then “DONK!” (how do the fucking people who designed those error message sounds live with themselves?) “Object not found.” Goddammit, GOD DAMMIT!
Line In and microphone aren’t the same thing. Right-click on your speaker in the bottom right and then “Recording devices” change the default device to microphone. If microphone isn’t listed, right-click on the list and show disables devices and enable it first.
Microphone isn’t listed. The only thing listed is “line in” and if my mic isn’t plugged in, it’s got a red X and says not plugged in, and if it is plugged in, it’s got a green check mark and says “working” (yeah, sure it is). The Set Default button is greyed out.
I’d take it back to the place that re-installed Vista, and show them that they failed to install the onboard mic - you shouldn’t have to figure it out yourself.
