Context, people, context. (And, yes, I knew that having listened to many 80s podcasts.)
Animated Grimlock might have been a minor character, but he is one of the most popular and iconic of the toys, and one of my toys from the 1980s I most regret selling/giving away in the 1990s.
What part of the 90s? (I have no fucking clue when the show started and I’m not going to fucking look it up) - that covers a lot of ground from “Fighting for liberation from fascists” to “getting educated, getting high and getting laid” to “working on a gold mine”, none of which set of activities were leaving much time for watching some not-even-real Americans going about their boring supposedly comedic lives.
Yep. Same. All I know about the show based on what I can recall from tiny bits I’ve seen is it’s about Propane and a family of hicks.
Yeah, I had him back in the day, along with Sludge. Omega Surpreme was my favorite Transformer, though.
I thought that poster was joking by pretending to be confused by a common term. I hope they really weren’t that stupid…
“I AM CORNHOLIO!!! I NEED TP FOR MY BUNGHOLE”
At least half the posters will have no idea, but it was another one of those cultural touchstones for the late 80s/90s. At least with people with MTV.
And by the same guy behind KotH.
And that was where I as a non-native speaker learned the acronym “TP”.
I know I get upset when you keep talking about Frodo and Messi without defining those obscure terms.
For those 2 obscure terms, not only I would not die for being asked about them, I would be extremely happy to expound on them until you are completely and utterly bored of Middle Earth and/or small football geniuses!
Frodo is the Godfather’s middle son and Messi is a player in the National Hockey League.
Thanks for the explanation! Also, keep up the good work, please.
The “video game” references always confuse me.
I don’t know one from another.
And I don’t necessarily want to be taught.
You can explain if you want to. I’m probably gonna zone out right quick.
If you don’t know who Boomhauer or what King of the Hill is, it would streamline the whole thing if you’d make a quick google before you get all bent out shape in the thread and post.
Once you post “who the hell is Boomhauer?” There’s a flurry of 12 posts, either explaining to you or folks saying “Here’s why I don’t know who or what this is”
And “la di da, tsk tsk, I never watch that stupid TV”. And the real topic is lost.
Maybe just don’t open the thread if you don’t understand the reference.
Your thread title might be “Omg, the WoW thingy is so cool”…I immediately know it’s not for me.
I have only seen a few episodes of King of the Hill and, for that matter, the Simpsons. Almost all of my knowledge of the situations, characters, etc of those shows is from references I’ve heard online. I’d never heard of Boomhauer until the recent post in Care Society. It took me all of fifteen seconds to look up the name on Wikipedia, then realize why I didn’t know who it was, and decide that I had no interest in following the thread.
There are a lot of popular TV shows I’ve never watched, for various reasons. I don’t play video games or watch anime, so references to them go over my head with the speed of a supersonic missile. Everyone has their own interests, and just as I don’t expect everyone to know about mine, I don’t expect to know about theirs.
I just had a brief portal open up to a forum in a kinder, gentler timeline…
There are days when I could use a Care Society. A place where everyone is pleasant, helpful, and considerate of others’ feelings.
I didnt even get that far
I thought Frodo was the Iranian nuclear site we just bombed.
I want a Care Society.
Like, now!
I’m curious, what led you to that conclusion? The entire post (plus a cite of the incorrect definition) was:
If you really want responses methinks you need to be less obtuse.
Not a smiley to be seen. The wording seemed to me kinda critical. Calling someone - or their words - obtuse isn’t exactly a compliment. And, at least in other forums, there is a practice of at least allowing a couple of serious responses before going into humor.
I ask because at times I seem to have difficulty perceiving and implementing the appropriate tone.
