Democracy vs. Democracy

What do we call it when the United States, a liberal democracy, uses civil violence and subversion to overthrow another democracy and install a distinctly unliberal form of dictatorship in its place? As, for instance, was done in (or to) Iran, Guatemala, Greece, Chile, etc. It may not be war in the classic sense, but war seldom is. It’s certainly violent, hostile and bloody, and a clear imposition of the one country’s will upon the other. C’est la guerre.

Hypocrisy.

Welcome to the Straight Dope, ewener. Given that you posted in Comments on Cecil’s Columns, I assume that you wanted to respond to this column: Is it true there has never been a war between two democracies? Including a link to the column you are referring to is always welcome.

As for your post, I should point out that in some of the examples you give, both the implication of the US and whether the country in question actually was a democracy before the coup d’état happened are questionable. I’m sure other posters will be coming with more information.
