Democratic Donors Urge Biden to Run. Should he?

It wasn’t manufactured, but it wasn’t such a big deal that I think he should have dropped out of the race. I’m not even sure if it was totally intentional. But Biden’s not the kind of guy to shift the blame to his staff, so he took the heat like a man.

Yes, pretty much. But you know how the partisan hyenas work.

Biden ran into a problem a lot of pols run into. There was an incident, the press found a pattern of behavior going WAY back, it got him labelled, and then his candidacy became untenable.

And like most good pols, he moved on. It was not a major ,or even a minor, issue in the 2008 campaign. It will not be in 2016.

Biden’s window is almost closed. If he were going to run credibly, he’d be at the first debate - but he won’t be. The impetus to run is not coming from him but from his staff, all of whom would rather get the adrenaline from *running *a presidential campaign than to have to resort to applying for menial positions with Clinton’s.

He extended his deadline. If he was going to say no, he’d just say no. He’s extending the deadline so that he can jump in as late as possible and make the campaign as short as possible.

Being the VP, and with supporters already ready to do what needs to be done, he has that luxury in a way any other candidate wouldn’t have.

Every day that Hillary does not plummet in the polls eats away at the possibility of Biden running. Before November is over the window will shut entirely for a conventional run. After that only an utter collapse of the Clinton campaign will allow him to be a late entry and because of Super Tuesday that window is pretty narrow also. There’s always the chance of a brokered convention after that, but without a successful primary campaign Joe will never get picked in those circumstances.

He had about a one month window to jump in, he didn’t, he should tell the world his intentions now.

Every day she doesn’t plummet in the polls? What campaign have you been watching? She’s squandered what Nate Silver called an insurmountable lead and her approval is now at Trump levels. She went from double digit leads over most Republican competitors to tied.

What would you consider a plummet? Does she have to fall behind Sanders in South Carolina and Nevada too? Does she have to trail Republican candidates by double digits?

If he was going to say yes, he’d just say yes, and would have long before now.

No, he might not say No, not right now. It has to be hard for him, dealing not only with his son’s death but with the reality that he’s not going to be President, even after a long career with that as the ultimate goal. It would be - will be - very hard for him to let down his inner circle of friends and staffers, too, by telling them it’s not going to happen, at a time when it’s hard to tell *himself *that. But that’s what the anti-Hillary factions (in both parties) are hanging their hopes on.

The facts remain that he’s not doing anything to get a campaign going even if his people are, it’s almost too late anyway, and he’s been pretty clear about his head and heart not being in it. As soon as he tells himself, he’ll tell the public, too.

Quite a few people said that about Kasich and Trump. Biden isn’t just musing about running, he’s setting dates for decisions.

Kasich and Trump have already done it, and did it when there was still plenty of time. Trump was one of the first Reps to declare. So, that comparison makes no sense.

Some of Biden’s staff (not him) are setting dates, yes, but he’s letting them pass.

No, Biden himself has set the most recent deadline. And sources close to him say a decision is probably coming in the next week:

Two of the three sources say he’s leaning yes.

Ah, yes, “sources”. Gotta love Washington.

A lot more sources say he’s looking to announce his decision this weekend, and that his decision is likely to be yes.

This is a crucial moment. I am increasingly skeptical that Hillary can win the general and Biden is probably the only one who can stop her in the primaries.

Her latest pollsin Iowa and New Hampshire are terrible.

On one hand, I’d rather the Republicans face Clinton or Sanders. But with Biden, at least that means I have a choice I can vote for without holding my nose if the GOP candidate is someone I don’t like, like Ted Cruz.

Eh, screw it, I can live with Biden as President pretty happily. It’s always nice to have two good choices.

Politico? Really? A bit more skepticism than you’re showing would be warranted.

Ah, the ‘win the morning’ crowd, doing their best to make something out of nothing.

The quote I liked best was:

Process?! There is no ‘process.’ It’s just Biden.

I’ll venture a prediction: whatever Biden does this weekend, he’s not going to announce that he’s running.

He might announce that he’s not running, but I figure more likely he doesn’t feel the need to announce anything at all. If he wants to remain the ‘in case of emergency, break glass’ candidate in case Hillary’s campaign turns into a disaster, that’s the only sensible course.

I don’t think he’ll run. If he’s heard some of the same focus groups I have, he’ll stay out.

Biden’s staff met yesterday with the DNC to get briefed on what he’d need to know to run.

But not the man himself. Been over that.
