How many states have a Democrat in the position of Secretary of State (or the equivalent position which runs and certifies elections)? Might be important. I know Arizona’s Secretary of State (who is also effectively lieutenant governor) is a Democrat for the first time since the mid 1990s.
This site might give a good lead on your answer. It seems that Chief Election Official is not always synonymous with Secretary of State.
