Deng Xiaoping: "It is glorious to be rich" ?

Did Deng Xiaoping say something like “It is glorious to be rich” (or something to that effect) and thus allow the capitalist revolution to take hold in China?

If so, does anyone have the quote in Chinese?

According to English Wikiquote, which cites this article, he never said it. The phrase in Chinese was allegedly 致富光榮.

This phrase is not in the Chinese Wikiquote either. I’ve also never heard of it, and I’m originally from Hong Kong.

This is certainly one way to look at his ideology. However, he probably never said it out loud like that.

Well… that cite says there’s no “proof” that he said it. I don’t know what that means exactly - no soundbytes? The quote comes following another thought. Deng was definitely progressive compared to Mao. The full quote is:

Poverty is not socialism. To be rich is glorious.

it’s widely attributed to Deng. another famous quote is:

It doesn’t matter if a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice.

Not that he didn’t say it, but if Wikiquote is to be believed though, this one was supposedly a pre-existing Sichuan proverb.
