You left Anne Coulter off of your list. Or do y’all take her seriously?
I don’t hate people…I hate policies.
I love Dennis Miller. I’ll be perfectly happy to watch this develop into his doctoral thesis on satire.
Well, you hate people enough to start GD threads about them.
I don’t like Dennis Miller’s politics but I still find him extremely funny. Loved him on Monday night football too.
I’d pay to see Dennis Miller make mince meat out of Ann Coulter. How the hell does she sell any books, let alone get on best seller lists.
occasionally, we on the right also have Arianna Huffington but that is getting to be rarer
Damn good entertainment that. Dennis Miller’s just not applying himself in the right venues.
Difference is, Anne Coulter’s not being intentionally funny …
That’s what gives her her edge. Keeps her hungry.
Well, she must be awfully hungry. She looks emaciated.

I don’t see much of a Great Debate, so off to Cafe Society.

Here’s a question. Let’s hypothesize that Bush loses the 2004 election to one of his democratic opponents. Will Miller remain an avowed conservative when they’re out of power or will he do a 180 and start sucking up to the new guys?
I believe it was Miller who said of the 2000 election, “it’s like choosing between cat shit and dog shit.” From this we can reason that since dog shit has been in office, Miller has acquired a taste for its suble textures and flavorings.
My guess is that if the Dem’s win in 2004, Miller will unabashedly tell it like he sees it. He’s smart enough to not hide behind party lines, and also smart enough to realize that in the face of Life, opinions, politics, and values are all malleable.

Dave Barry?
He’s always impressed me as an equal-opportunity jibester.

Here’s a quote from Dennis Millers rant on the Tonight Show:
"You know something, if they couldn’t – I say we invade Iraq and then invade Chirac. You run a pipe – you run a pipe from the oil field right over this Eiffel Tower, shoot it up and have the world’s biggest oil derrick. We got a picture of it right here. Yeah. Listen, I would call the French scum bags, but that, of course, would be a disservice to bags filled with scum.
I’m just saying listen, I’d like to have allies too. What’s happening in this world right now, we have a competency chasm. We are getting real good at what we do and the whole world is going to hell in a handbasket. As that gap gets wider, they’ll hate us more and more and more. We are simultaneously the most hated, feared, loved and admired planet – nation on this planet. In short, we are Frank Sinatra and you know something, the Chairman didn’t get to be the Chairman lying down for punks outside the Fontainbleu. "
Here’s a link to a transcript of the rant, there are a ton of links out there on this, I just picked one at random.
I saw this bit when it first aired, and I found his little stream of consciousness Merry Racist routine pretty disturbing. That night killed any respect that I might have had for him, I believe that he was just latching onto an issue that he thought would get him attention.
I understand that offensive humour can be a safety valve, but he did this at a time when there was a great deal of palpable hatred directed at all French people, and I found it jarring and opportunistic. In my opinion, he’s nothing more than a hate monger. He didn’t direct anger or ridicule against the French Government, or the people in power…he included all of the French.
I liked Dennis Miller when he was a liberal and I like him even more now. He’s always had very intelligent comedy…and his intelligence is obviously why he became more conservative.

Geez, he’s a comedian for chrissakes. He’s harmless. How come you don’t criticize Leno for all his jokes about everything from A-Z, including the French? How come you’re not on your soapbox denouncing, say, all the black comics that trash white folks on a routine basis? SNL does some pretty slam-dunk parodies as well. Should they go off the air?

Racist??? Fer chrissake, it’s just the french he’s beating on.
What bothers me about the link from the OP is not that Dennis Miller is now espousing conservative views. It’s that his jokes are so embarassingly, painfully, non-funny. Yes, Byrd used to be in the Klan. That’s not something to ignore or take lightly. But it’s something that is totally irrelevant to the discussion at hand. If Byrd himself were actually the target of debate, ie, if he were running for president, then he would be to some extent fair game (so I think dredging up GWBush’s perhaps-shady past is at least somewhat fair game). But to attack the democratic party and liberal thought in general by making cross-burning jokes about Byrd is crass, irrelevant and stupid.
Similarly, comparing someone who took a principled stance opposed to the war to Neville Chamberlain is about as relevant, fair and funny as pointing out that Bush is not particularl pro-gay-rights… and neither was Hitler!!!
(PS, Sam Stone, what evidence would you accept to convince you that I don’t hate everyone who disagrees with me? Heck, I don’t hate Dennis Miller, but I do think the quoted “jokes” from the link are terrible…) (Hint: if no evidence could exist that would convince you, then your position is probably not a sound one…)
