Der Kommissar by Falco

Not even close…

I never made the connection between those two songs.

Which ripped off Elvis Costello.

You mean EC’s “Pump It Up,” which was a ripoff of Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” which was a ripoff of Chuck Berry’s “Too Much Monkey Business”?

Fair enough.
I know all those songs of course, but I was only alive for “Wild Wild West.” So I get it in reverse. “Wild Wild West” was a big hit when I was a kid and I mostly listened to top 40 radio and Casey Kasem’s countdown.

Now I mostly listen to independent rock/alternative music. There is one radio station I listen to. They play “Pump It Up” fairly regularly. Every time that song comes on I think it’s “Wild Wild West”- though I know they would never play that song and don’t play any hit songs from the late 80s except Love and Rockets.

Yeah, they were both released at about the same time (1981), and while I see the similarity, I would hardly call Der Kommisar a rip-off of Superfreak. I would say any resemblance is coincidental.

I don’t find that nearly as earwormy as GFI. Unless it’s being sung parodically (screeching, mostly) it’s a fairly pleasant little song. But I understand the dis-love for it.

Now I’m probably gonna have wild wild west stuck in my head all night. Thanks a lot, yo.

I have this box set loaded on my ipod… it’s got some good cheezy music. Alongside the actively good songs like “867-5309/Jenny” and “Tainted Love,” you have crap like “Pac-Man Fever” and that Meco "Empire Strikes Back"song.

And yes, Der Kommissar is on there - but the After the Fire version.

Me too. Mine also had such deathless tunes as “Puttin’ On The Ritz” by Taco, “One Night In Bangkok” by Murray Head, “Somebody’s Watchin’ Me” by Shalimar, “I Wanna Be A Cowboy” by…can’t remember…eh, that’s enough

Rockwell, wasn’t it?

Damn, you’re right. Not sure where I got Shalimar.

So has anyone seen the musical “Falco meets Amadeus”? I know it was performed in his native Austria, where he was more popular than the couple-hit wonder he’s known for in the US and I’ve heard the soundtrack, but haven’t found any way to view it. From what I’ve seen of summaries, it sounds like it’s some sort of “It’s a Wonderful Life” type storyline with Amadeus serving as a guide for Falco.

God knows, going through Youtube to look for videos of some of Falco’s not-quite-as-known songs is strange enough, I can imagine what a musical play based on an interpretation of him would be like.

Oh my God, Jeanny! I loved that song back in, what, 1985? I agree- much better than DK. So cheesy and so great.

Shalimar was “Dancin’ In The Sheets” from the Footloose soundtrack.

You’re welcome.

I actually had a couple. One had “Heartbreak Beat” by the Psychedlic Furs  and “The Politics of Dancing” by Re-Flex. Great songs, I’d love to hear them again.

I have multiple songs running in my head now.
Thanks, y’all.
Really… OK… actually y’all are evil people.

Rock Me Amadeus? Argh.

I do too.

You gotta get SiriusXM satradio, their 80’s channel is amazing

Crap? Crap! OK, fine, crap. But I loved that song so much as a kid. I played the vinyl album so much it warped, which made the video game sound effects that much cooler IMO.

M-M-M-M-M-Mousetrap! Mousetrap! Cheese was the bait!
