My favorite singer of all time. You haven’t? You sure? Austrian rock/pop/rap/a crapload of other genres singer. The guy who did Rock Me Amadeus. Still haven’t heard of him? Get Der Kommissar on Morpheus or some such service if you want to know who I’m talking about.
Everything I know about Falco in three easy steps:
- Sang “Rock Me Amadeus”. (Great song. I shoulda mentioned that one in the “Essential 80s” thread.)
- Wrote and/or sang “Der Kommissar” however, the version by After the Fire is the one most often heard in America.
- Died recently in some accident involving an SUV.
Sure I’ve listened to Falco. I’m not sure what you’re drivin’ at.
He died several years ago, actually, in 1993-- car crash in Dominican Republic.
Jeez, of COURSE everyone knows of Falco. I spent half a year in Vienna in 1991 and my host brother would play nothing but him and the Bingo Boys (I think they were called. . . a version of Abba’s SOS about Edelweiss?).
No…he died in 98.
If you have the VH1 Classic Rock channel, you can catch the videos for the above mentioned songs. I also like “Vienna Calling”. He was apparently working on a comeback album right before his death.
And for a touching tribute to the great artistry of Falco, check out this link (Warning: Explicit audio automatically played upon loading):
And if you hurry, the video is co-incidentally playing on the “Interactive TV” feature!
[Simpsons] “Thank you, Taco, for that moving tribute to Falco.” [/Simpsons]
Just for the record, you can buy a DVD containing all of Falco’s music videos at amazon.de. Note: This DVD is Region 2 and in the PAL format, so you will probably need a hacked DVD-ROM to play it.
And, also for the record, let us never forget Falco’s immortal words:
Sie kommen. Sie kommen, dich zu holen. Aber sie werden dich nicht finden! NIEMAND wird dich finden! DU BIST BEI MIR!!
Translation: They’re coming. They’re coming to get you. But they won’t find you! NO ONE will find you! YOU ARE WITH ME!
I heard he was a sniper in Desert Storm, and that he was killed while fighting in Yugoslavia.
Dude. I always wondered what that line from Jeanny meant.
